Partēs Ōrātiōnis
20. Words are divided into eight Parts of Speech: Nouns, Adjectives (including Participles), Pronouns, Verbs, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections.
20. 단어는 여덟 품사 (品詞) 로 나뉜다 — 명사 (Noun), 형용사 (Adjective, 분사 포함), 대명사 (Pronoun), 동사 (Verb), 부사 (Adverb), 전치사 (Preposition), 접속사 (Conjunction), 감탄사 (Interjection).
a. A Noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea: as, Caesar; Rōma, Rome; domus, a house; virtūs, virtue.
Names of particular persons and places are called Proper Nouns; other nouns are called Common.
a. 명사 는 사람·장소·사물·관념의 이름이다. 예: Caesar (카이사르), Rōma (로마), domus (집), virtūs (덕).
특정 사람·장소의 이름을 고유 명사, 그 외를 보통 명사 라 한다.
b. An Adjective is a word that attributes a quality: as, bonus, good; fortis, brave, strong.
b. 형용사 는 성질을 부여하는 단어이다. 예: bonus (좋은), fortis (용감한, 강한).
c. A Pronoun is a word used to distinguish a person, place, thing, or idea without either naming or describing it: as, is, he; quī, who; nōs, we.
Nouns and pronouns are often called Substantives.
c. 대명사 는 사람·장소·사물·관념을 *명명하거나 묘사하지 않고* 구별하는 데 쓰이는 단어이다. 예: is (그), quī (누구·누가), nōs (우리).
명사와 대명사를 합쳐 실사 (實詞, Substantives) 라고도 한다.
d. A Verb is a word which is capable of asserting something: as, sum, I am; amat, he loves.
d. 동사 는 무언가를 *주장* 할 수 있는 단어이다. 예: sum (나는 ~이다), amat (그가 사랑한다).
e. An Adverb is a word used to express the time, place, or manner of an assertion or attribute: as, splendidē mendāx, gloriously false; hodiē nātus est, he was born to-day.
e. 부사 는 주장이나 성질의 시간·장소·방법을 표현하는 단어이다. 예: splendidē mendāx (영광스럽게 거짓된), hodiē nātus est (오늘 태어났다).
f. A Preposition is a word which shows the relation between a noun or pronoun and some other word or words in the same sentence: as, per agrōs it, he goes over the fields; ē plūribus ūnum, one out of many.
f. 전치사 는 명사·대명사와 같은 문장 內 다른 단어들 사이의 관계를 보여주는 단어이다. 예: per agrōs it (그가 들판을 가로질러 간다), ē plūribus ūnum (여럿에서 하나).
g. A Conjunction is a word which connects words, or groups of words, without affecting their grammatical relations: as, et, and; sed, but.
g. 접속사 는 단어나 단어군을 *문법 관계에 영향을 미치지 않고* 연결하는 단어이다. 예: et (그리고), sed (그러나).
h. Interjections are mere exclamations and are not strictly to be classed as parts of speech. Thus, heus, halloo!; ō, oh!
h. 감탄사 는 단순한 외침이며 엄밀히는 품사로 분류되지 않는다. 예: heus (이봐!), ō (오!).
21. Latin is an inflected language.
Inflection is a change made in the form of a word to show its grammatical relations.
21. 라틴어는 굴절어 (inflected language) 이다.
굴절 은 문법 관계를 보이기 위해 단어 형태에 가해지는 변화이다.
a. Inflectional changes sometimes take place in the body of a word, or at the beginning, but oftener in its termination:
a. 굴절적 변화는 때로 단어의 *몸통* 이나 *시작* 에서 일어나지만, 더 자주 *어미* 에서 일어난다.
b. Terminations of inflection had originally independent meanings which are now obscured. They correspond nearly to the use of prepositions, auxiliaries, and personal pronouns in English.
Thus, in vocat, the termination is equivalent to he or she; in vōcis, to the preposition of; and in vocet the change of vowel signifies a change of mood.
b. 굴절 어미는 본래 독립적 의미를 가졌으나 지금은 그 의미가 흐려졌다. 영어의 전치사·조동사·인칭 대명사의 사용에 거의 대응한다.
따라서 vocat 의 어미는 he 또는 she 와 동등하고, vōcis 의 어미는 전치사 of 와 동등하며, vocet 의 모음 변화는 *법* (mood) 의 변화를 의미한다.
c. Inflectional changes in the body of a verb usually denote relations of tense or mood, and often correspond to the use of auxiliary verbs in English:
c. 동사 몸통 안 굴절적 변화는 보통 *시제* 또는 *법* 의 관계를 나타내며, 영어의 조동사 사용에 종종 대응한다.
22. The inflection of Nouns, Adjectives, Pronouns, and Participles to denote gender, number, and case is called Declension, and these parts of speech are said to be declined.
The inflection of Verbs to denote voice, mood, tense, number, and person is called Conjugation, and the verb is said to be conjugated.
22. 명사·형용사·대명사·분사 의 *성·수·격* 굴절을 격변화 (Declension, 名詞變化) 라 하며, 이들 품사는 declined (격변화한다) 한다고 말한다.
동사 의 *태·법·시제·수·인칭* 굴절을 활용 (Conjugation, 動詞活用) 이라 하며, 동사는 conjugated (활용한다) 한다.
23. Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections are not inflected and are called Particles.
23. 부사·전치사·접속사·감탄사 는 굴절하지 않으며, 불변화사 (Particles) 라 한다.
24. The body of a word, to which the terminations are attached, is called the Stem.
The Stem contains the idea of the word without relations; but, except in the first part of a compound (as arti-fex, artificer), it cannot ordinarily be used without some termination to express them.
Thus the stem vōc- denotes voice; with -s added it becomes vōx, a voice (subject); with -is it becomes vōcis, of a voice.
25. A Root is the simplest form attainable by analysis of a word into its component parts.
Such a form contains the main idea of the word in a very general sense, and is common also to other words either in the same language or in kindred languages.
Thus the root of the stem vōc- is VOC, which does not mean to call, or I call, or calling, but merely expresses vaguely the idea of calling, and cannot be used as a part of speech without terminations.
26. The Stem may be the same as the root: as dūc-is, of a leader; fer-t, he bears. But it is more frequently formed from the root —
1. By changing or lengthening its vowel: as in scōb-s, sawdust (root SCAB, shave); rēg-is, of a king (root REG, direct); vōc-is, of a voice (root VOC, call).
2. By the addition of a simple suffix (originally another root): as in fugā-, stem of fuga, flight (FUG + ā-); regi-s, you rule (REG + ¹/-).
3. By two or more of these methods.
4. By derivation and composition, following the laws of development peculiar to the language.
26. 어간은 어근과 같을 수 있다. 예: dūc-is (지도자의), fer-t (그가 운반한다). 그러나 어근으로부터 다음과 같이 더 자주 형성된다 —
1. 모음을 *변화*·*연장* 하여. 예: scōb-s (톱밥, 어근 SCAB 깎다), rēg-is (왕의, 어근 REG 다스리다), vōc-is (음성의, 어근 VOC 부르다).
2. 단순 *접사* 의 추가에 의해 (본래 또 다른 어근). 예: fugā- (도망의 어간, FUG + ā-), regi-s (네가 다스린다).
3. 위 방법들 중 둘 이상을 결합하여.
4. *파생* 과 *합성* 에 의해, 언어 고유의 발전 법칙을 따라.
27. The Base is that part of a word which is unchanged in inflection: as serv- in servus; mēns- in mēnsa; ign- in ignis.
27. 어기 는 굴절에서 변하지 않는 단어의 부분이다. 예: servus (노예) 의 serv-, mēnsa (식탁) 의 mēns-, ignis (불) 의 ign-.
29. The Genders distinguished in Latin are three: Masculine, Feminine, and Neuter.
30. The gender of Latin nouns is either natural or grammatical.
29. 라틴어에서 구별되는 성 은 셋이다 — 남성 (Masculine), 여성 (Feminine), 중성 (Neuter).
30. 라틴어 명사의 성은 자연성 (natural) 이거나 문법성 (grammatical) 이다.
a. Natural Gender is distinction as to the sex of the object denoted: as puer (M.), boy; puella (F.), girl; rēx (M.), king; rēgīna (F.), queen.
a. 자연성 은 지시되는 대상의 성에 따른 구분이다. 예: puer (남, 소년), puella (여, 소녀), rēx (남, 왕), rēgīna (여, 여왕).
b. Grammatical Gender is a formal distinction as to sex where no actual sex exists in the object. It is shown by the form of the adjective joined with the noun: as lapis magnus (M.), a great stone; manus mea (F.), my hand.
b. 문법성 은 대상에 실제 성이 없는 경우의 *형식적* 성 구분이다. 명사에 결합된 형용사의 형태로 드러난다. 예: lapis magnus (남, 큰 돌), manus mea (여, 나의 손).
31. Names of Male beings, and of Rivers, Winds, Months, and Mountains, are masculine:
31. 남성 존재, 그리고 강·바람·달·산 의 이름은 남성 이다:
a. A few names of Rivers ending in -a (as Allia), with the Greek names Lēthē and Styx, are feminine; others are variable or uncertain.
b. Some names of Mountains are feminine or neuter, taking the gender of their termination: as Alpēs (F.), the Alps; Sōracte (N.).
a. -a 로 끝나는 일부 강 이름 (예: Allia) 과 그리스 이름 Lēthē·Styx 는 여성이다. 그 외는 가변적이거나 불확실하다.
b. 일부 산 이름은 어미의 성을 취해 여성 또는 중성이다. 예: Alpēs (여, 알프스), Sōracte (중).
32. Names of Female beings, of Cities, Countries, Plants, Trees, and Gems, of many Animals (especially Birds), and of most abstract Qualities, are feminine:
32. 여성 존재, 도시·나라·식물·나무·보석, 많은 동물 (특히 새), 대부분의 추상적 자질 의 이름은 여성 이다:
33. Indeclinable nouns, infinitives, terms or phrases used as nouns, and words quoted merely for their form, are neuter:
33. 불변화 명사, 부정사, 명사처럼 쓰인 용어·구, 그리고 그 형태 자체로 인용된 단어는 중성 이다:
34. Many nouns may be either masculine or feminine, according to the sex of the object. These are said to be of Common Gender: as exsul, exile; bōs, ox or cow; parēns, parent.
34. 많은 명사는 대상의 성에 따라 남성 또는 여성이 될 수 있다. 이들을 공통성 (Common Gender) 이라 한다. 예: exsul (망명자), bōs (소 — 황소 또는 암소), parēns (부모).
