Third Declension · Endings & General Pattern
3격변화 — 어미와 일반 패턴
English

The third declension is the largest and most diverse of Latin's five noun declensions. Unlike the first and second (with their characteristic stem-vowels -ā- and -o-), the third declension shows a great variety of stem-finals, all yielding the same set of case-endings.

The endings of the third declension (m./f. nouns):

Singular: Nōm. (the bare stem, often modified); Gen. -is; Dat. ; Acc. -em; Abl. -e (or in i-stems).
Plural: Nōm./Voc. -ēs; Gen. -um (or -ium in i-stems); Dat./Abl. -ibus; Acc. -ēs (or -īs in i-stems).

For neuter nouns: Nōm./Acc./Voc. all share one form (the bare stem); plural Nōm./Acc./Voc. ends in -a (or -ia in i-stems). Other cases match the m./f. pattern.

The "tag" for any third-declension noun is the genitive singular ending -is. When a noun's nominative singular looks unusual or unpredictable, the genitive reveals its stem (the form to which case-endings attach): rēx, rēgis → stem rēg-.

This declension is divided historically into two great classes:
Consonant-stems: ancient Indo-European stems ending in a consonant. Treated in this Lectiō (VII).
i-stems: stems originally ending in -i- (a vowel). Treated in Lectiō VIII.

The two classes show different patterns in three diagnostic cases: ablative singular (-e vs. ), genitive plural (-um vs. -ium), and (for neuters) nominative/accusative plural (-a vs. -ia).

제3격변화는 라틴어의 5 격변화 중 가장 크고 다양한 부류다. 1·2격변화(특징적 어간 모음 -ā-·-o-)와 달리, 3격변화는 어간 종성이 매우 다양한데, 모두 같은 격 어미 세트를 산출한다.

3격변화 어미(남·여 명사):

단수: 주격 (어간 그대로, 흔히 변형); 속격 -is; 여격 ; 대격 -em; 탈격 -e(i-어간에서는 ).
복수: 주·호격 -ēs; 속격 -um(i-어간에서는 -ium); 여·탈격 -ibus; 대격 -ēs(i-어간에서는 -īs).

Stem Classification · Six Sub-types of Consonant Stems
자음 어간의 6 하위 분류
English

Consonant stems in the third declension are classified by the nature of the stem-final consonant. Each sub-type causes characteristic phonological adjustments at the stem-ending boundary, especially in the nominative singular (where the stem meets the case-ending -s or zero).

The six main sub-types:

(1) Mute (stop) consonant stems — ending in -c-, -g-, -t-, -d-, -p-, -b-. These produce nominative singulars in -x (-c-+s or -g-+s) or in -s (-t-+s drops t). Examples: rēx, rēgis (king); rādīx, rādīcis (root); mīles, mīlitis (soldier); princeps, principis (chief); cūstōs, cūstōdis (guard).

(2) Liquid stems — ending in -l- or -r-. These typically have nominative singulars without an -s, the bare stem serving as nom. Examples: cōnsul, cōnsulis (consul); orātor, orātōris (speaker); pater, patris (father); frāter, frātris (brother); māter, mātris (mother).

(3) Nasal stems — ending in -n-. Often the -n drops in the nominative, leaving a long vowel: leō, leōnis (lion); virgō, virginis (maiden); homō, hominis (human); ōrātiō, ōrātiōnis (speech).

(4) Sibilant stems — ending in -s-. The stem-s often becomes -r- in oblique cases (rhotacism): flōs, flōris (flower; from older *flōs-is); opus, operis (work); genus, generis (kind); corpus, corporis (body).

(5) Neuter t/d stems — neuter nouns with -t- or -d- stems showing nom./acc. without ending: caput, capitis (head); lac, lactis (milk); cor, cordis (heart, with consonant cluster simplification).

(6) Special / Irregular consonant stems — including iter, itineris (way, journey, with stem alternation); iūs, iūris (right, law); ūs, ūsūs (some are between 3rd and 4th decl.).

3격변화 자음 어간은 어간 종성 자음의 성질에 따라 분류된다. 각 하위형은 어간-어미 경계에서, 특히 주격 단수(어간이 격 어미 -s 또는 영(零)과 만나는 곳)에서 특징적인 음운 조정을 일으킨다.

여섯 주요 하위형:

(1) 폐쇄음 어간-c-, -g-, -t-, -d-, -p-, -b-로 끝남. 주격 단수가 -x(-c-+s·-g-+s) 또는 -s(-t-+st 탈락)로. 예: rēx, rēgis(왕); rādīx, rādīcis(뿌리); mīles, mīlitis(병사); princeps, principis(우두머리); cūstōs, cūstōdis(경비).

(2) 유음 어간-l-·-r-로 끝남. 보통 주격 단수에 -s 없이, 어간 그대로가 주격. 예: cōnsul, cōnsulis(집정관); orātor, orātōris(연설가); pater, patris(아버지); frāter, frātris(형제); māter, mātris(어머니).

(3) 비음 어간-n-로 끝남. 흔히 -n이 주격에서 탈락하고 장모음만 남음: leō, leōnis(사자); virgō, virginis(처녀); homō, hominis(사람); ōrātiō, ōrātiōnis(연설).

(4) 치찰음 어간-s-로 끝남. 어간 s가 사격에서 흔히 -r-로 변함(rhotacism): flōs, flōris(꽃; 옛 *flōs-is에서); opus, operis(일); genus, generis(종류); corpus, corporis(몸).

(5) 중성 t/d 어간 — 어미 없이 주·대격 형을 보이는 -t-·-d- 어간 중성: caput, capitis(머리); lac, lactis(우유); cor, cordis(심장, 자음 군 단순화와).

(6) 특수·불규칙 자음 어간iter, itineris(길·여정, 어간 교체); iūs, iūris(권리·법); 3·4격변화 사이에 있는 일부.

§ 55
Nominative Formation · Four Patterns
주격 형성의 4 패턴
English

The 3rd-declension nominative singular shows four characteristic formations:

(1) Stem + -s (with phonological adjustment): for stems in mute consonants. Stem rēg- + srēx (the -gs- contracts to -x-). Stem mīlit- + smīles (the -t- drops before -s-). Stem cūstōd- + scūstōs (similar to mīles).

(2) Stem unchanged (zero ending): for stems in liquids (-l-, -r-) and (with stem-vowel modification) some others. cōnsul from stem cōnsul-; orātor from stem orātōr-; pater from stem patr- (with vowel e inserted in nom. for pronunciation). The bare stem becomes the nominative.

(3) Stem with vowel lengthening / consonant loss: nasal stems often drop final -n: leō from stem leōn-; virgō from virgin-; homō from homin-. The stem-vowel sometimes lengthens for compensation.

(4) Stem with phonological alteration: sibilant stems show rhotacism (s → r intervocalically). flōs from stem flōs-; gen. flōris from flōs-is → *flōsis → flōris. The nom. preserves -s; the oblique cases show -r-.

The general principle: Latin nominatives are not always direct from the stem; they often show ancient phonological adjustments. To find the true stem, look at the genitive singular and remove the ending -is: that gives the working stem to which all other endings attach.

한국어

3격변화 주격 단수는 4 특징적 형성을 보인다:

(1) 어간 + -s(음운 조정과 함께): 폐쇄음 어간에. 어간 rēg- + srēx(-gs--x-로 축약). 어간 mīlit- + smīles(-t--s- 앞에 탈락).

Family Words pater, māter, frāter (and iuvenis, senex) keep consonantal inflection in genitive plural: patrum, mātrum, frātrum, iuvenum, senum — never -ium. They resist the i-stem encroachment that affects most 3rd-declension nouns. This is one of Latin's most-tested rules: family-words use -um, not -ium.
친족 명사 pater, māter, frāter(그리고 iuvenis, senex)는 속격 복수에서 자음어간 곡용을 유지: patrum, mātrum, frātrum, iuvenum, senum — 결코 -ium이 아님. 이들은 대부분의 3격변화 명사에 영향을 주는 i-어간 침투에 저항한다. 가장 자주 시험되는 라틴어 규칙 중 하나: 친족 명사는 -um, -ium이 아님.

Neuter 3rd-declension nouns follow the universal rule: nominative, accusative, and vocative are identical (in both singular and plural). Plural Nōm./Acc./Voc. ends in -a. The consonant-stem neuters do NOT use -ia in plural (that's for i-stem neuters; see Lectiō VIII).

The genitive ending -is reveals the working stem. From there all other endings attach.

Many neuter 3rd-decl. nouns are abstract or collective: tempus (time), opus (work), genus (kind), scelus (crime), nōmen (name), flūmen (river), carmen (song). They form the basis of Latin's vocabulary for abstract concepts and natural phenomena.

한국어

중성 3격변화 명사는 보편 규칙을 따른다: 주격·대격·호격 동일(단·복수 모두). 복수 주·대·호격이 -a로 끝남. 자음어간 중성은 복수에 -ia를 사용하지 않는다(이는 i-어간 중성용; Lectiō VIII 참조).

속격 어미 -is가 작동 어간을 드러낸다. 거기서 다른 모든 어미가 부착된다.

많은 중성 3격변화 명사가 추상·집합 명사다: tempus(시간), opus(일), genus(종류), scelus(범죄), nōmen(이름), flūmen(강), carmen(노래). 추상 개념과 자연 현상에 대한 라틴어 어휘의 기초를 이룬다.
