Verba Irregulāria
A small group of high-frequency Latin verbs preserves archaic athematic conjugations or supplies its forms from multiple stems (suppletion). These are the "irregular verbs" — but their irregularity is itself ancient, not random: the regularization of Latin verbs proceeded historically, and these old verbs simply resisted (because of their high frequency and the conservative force of usage).
The irregular verbs of Latin:
(1) sum — already treated (§ 158, Lectiō XV). The most fundamental: "to be".
(2) possum — already treated (§ 159). Compound: pot- + sum.
(3) ferō, ferre, tulī, lātum "carry, bring". Athematic in present; suppletive perfect (tulī from a different root).
(4) volō, velle, voluī "wish". Athematic in present; nōlō and mālō are compounds.
(5) nōlō, nōlle, nōluī "be unwilling" = nē + volō.
(6) mālō, mālle, māluī "prefer" = magis + volō.
(7) eō, īre, iī (or īvī), itum "go". Stem alternates e-/ī-.
(8) fīō, fierī, factus sum "become / be made / happen". Active in form (present system) but supplies passive of faciō.
(9) edō, edere/ēsse, ēdī, ēsum "eat". Has both regular and athematic forms.
(10) queō, quīre, quīvī "be able"; nequeō "be unable" — defective companion verbs to possum, mostly poetic.
The irregularities concentrate in the present-system indicative; the perfect system, once the principal parts are memorized, is mostly regular. The forms are often athematic — meaning the personal endings attach directly to the root without a connecting vowel.
These verbs are essential for reading any Latin text: they are among the most frequent words in the language, and beginners must memorize their paradigms early. Sum, possum, volō, eō, ferō, fīō together account for a substantial fraction of all Latin verb-tokens in classical authors.
(3) ferō, ferre, tulī, lātum(운반·가져오다). 현재에서 무주제; 보충법 완료(tulī는 다른 어근에서).
(4) volō, velle, voluī(원하다). 현재에서 무주제; nōlō·mālō는 합성어.
(5) nōlō, nōlle, nōluī(원치 않다) = nē + volō.
(6) mālō, mālle, māluī(차라리 원하다) = magis + volō.
(7) eō, īre, iī(또는 īvī), itum(가다). 어간이 e-/ī-로 교체.
(8) fīō, fierī, factus sum(되다·만들어지다·일어나다). 형은 능동(현재 체계)이나 faciō의 수동을 보충.
(9) edō, edere/ēsse, ēdī, ēsum(먹다).
ferō is a third-conjugation verb that lacks the connecting vowel in some forms — i.e., the personal endings attach directly to the root fer- in places where regular 3rd-conj. verbs would have a connecting i or u.
The perfect tulī and supine lātum come from a different root (Indo-European tlē-, lā-) — classic suppletion: the present comes from one root, the perfect from another, with the original meaning being "carry, bear, endure".
Compounds of ferō are extremely common and must be learned: auferō "carry away" (= ab+ferō), cōnferō "bring together, compare" (= com+ferō), differō "differ" (= dis+ferō), īnferō "carry into" (= in+ferō), offerō "offer" (= ob+ferō), perferō "endure" (= per+ferō), referō "report, refer" (= re+ferō), trānsferō "transfer" (= trāns+ferō), circumferō "carry around", praeferō "carry in front, prefer", prōferō "carry forward, propose", sufferō "submit, undergo".
All compounds conjugate exactly like ferō, with the prefix attached. The 1sg. perfect of auferō is abstulī (= abs+tulī), supine ablātum — a useful reminder that the perfect-stem suppletion persists in compounds.

Three closely related verbs of wishing form a tight semantic group:
(1) volō, velle, voluī "wish, want, will" (the will-verb proper).
(2) nōlō, nōlle, nōluī "not wish, be unwilling" (= nē + volō; the negative).
(3) mālō, mālle, māluī "prefer, wish rather" (= magis + volō; "more-want").
They are athematic in the present indicative — that is, the personal endings attach directly to the stem without the usual connecting vowel. None has a passive voice or true imperative (except nōlī, nōlīte, which is used to form negative commands: nōlī ire "do not go" = "be unwilling to go"). They have no participles in the perfect or supine.
The three verbs are paradigmatic for expressing volition in Latin. volō is the unmarked wish; nōlō negates the wish; mālō compares two wishes and selects one. Examples:
• volō librum "I want the book" — direct desire.
• volō discere "I wish to learn" — with infinitive complement.
• nōlō pugnāre "I am unwilling to fight".
• mālō scrībere quam loquī "I prefer to write rather than speak" — comparison via quam.
The infinitives velle, nōlle, mālle are unique forms reflecting the athematic conjugation; they are mnemonic-friendly for their odd appearance.
의지를 표현하는 세 자매 동사가 긴밀한 의미 그룹을 이룬다:
(1) volō, velle, voluī(원하다·바라다·하려 한다) — 의지 동사 본 형.
(2) nōlō, nōlle, nōluī(원치 않다 = nē + volō; 부정).
(3) mālō, mālle, māluī(차라리 ~ 원하다 = magis + volō; "더-원하다").
• volō librum(나는 책을 원한다) — 직접 욕구.
• volō discere(배우기를 원한다) — 부정사 보충어와.
• nōlō pugnāre(싸우기를 원치 않는다).
• mālō scrībere quam loquī(말하기보다 쓰기를 선호한다) — quam으로 비교.
부정사 velle, nōlle, mālle는 무주제 활용을 반영하는 독특한 형 — 이상한 외관 때문에 외우기 쉽다.

eō uses two parallel stems in the present system: e- before vowels (eō, eunt, ībō) and ī- elsewhere (īs, it, īmus, ītis, ībam...). The principal parts: eō, īre, iī (or īvī), itum. The perfect iī is more common in classical prose; īvī appears occasionally and in certain compounds.
Compounds are common and important — many English words derive from them via French/Italian: abeō (go away), adeō (approach, also = "even, indeed" as adverb), exeō (go out), ineō (enter, "begin" — ineō annum "I enter (the new) year"), obeō (go to meet, perish), pereō (perish — per+eō, "go through to the end"), redeō (return), trānseō (cross), circumeō (go around), praeeō (go in front), subeō (go under, undertake), īnitium (a beginning — derived noun), aditus (an approach — derived noun).
Note: compounds with directional senses (e.g., trānseō "cross") are sometimes transitive and form their own passive paradigm: flūmen trānsītur "the river is crossed". The simple eō is intransitive, so its passive is impersonal: ītur "there is going / people are going".
The future participle is itūrus, -a, -um "about to go"; the gerundive eundus, -a, -um. The ablative absolute itō "with going" is rare.
eō는 현재 체계에서 두 평행 어간을 쓴다: 모음 앞 e-(eō, eunt, ībō), 그 외 ī-(īs, it, īmus, ītis, ībam...).
단순 eō는 자동사이므로 수동은 비인칭: ītur(가는 일이 있다 / 사람들이 가고 있다).
미래 분사는 itūrus, -a, -um(가려는); 형용동명사는 eundus, -a, -um. 절대 탈격 itō(감으로 인해)는 드물다.

fīō is unique in Latin's verb system. It is active in form in the present system (fīō, fīs, fit...), but it serves as the passive of faciō "do, make" — which has only marginal native passive forms. The perfect system is fully passive: factus sum "I was made / I have become".
The morphology is mostly fourth-conjugation in feel: fīō, fīs, fit, fīmus, fītis, fīunt; pres. inf. fierī. The long ī is generally preserved.
The dual semantics — "become / happen / be made" — reflects the verb's role:
(a) "to be made" (passive of faciō): aliquid fit ā Caesare "something is made by Caesar".
(b) "to become" (linking-verb sense): fit melius "it becomes better"; cōnsul fit "he becomes consul" (= "is made consul").
(c) "to happen" (impersonal): fit ut omnēs errent "it happens that all err".
The perfect participle factus is identical to that of faciō — they share the same one. The future participle is futūrus (from sum!) — yet another suppletion. The gerundive faciendus belongs to faciō; fīō has none of its own.
Like volō, fīō bears witness to the fact that Latin's verbal system is not a clean grid but a living mosaic shaped by phonology, syntax, and historical accident.
fīō는 라틴어 동사 체계에서 독특하다. 현재 체계에서는 능동 형(fīō, fīs, fit...)이지만, faciō(하다·만들다)의 수동을 보충한다 — faciō는 고유 수동 형이 거의 없다. 완료 체계는 완전히 수동: factus sum(내가 만들어졌다 / 내가 되었다).
형태론은 대체로 4활용 느낌: fīō, fīs, fit, fīmus, fītis, fīunt; 현재 부정사 fierī. 장음 ī는 대체로 보존.
이중 의미 — "되다 / 일어나다 / 만들어지다" — 가 동사의 역할을 반영:
(가) "만들어지다"(faciō의 수동): aliquid fit ā Caesare(어떤 것이 카이사르에 의해 만들어진다).
(나) "되다"(연결동사 의미): fit melius(더 좋게 된다); cōnsul fit(집정관이 된다 = "집정관으로 만들어진다").
(다) "일어나다"(비인칭): fit ut omnēs errent(모두가 잘못하는 일이 일어난다).
완료 분사 factus는 faciō의 것과 동일 — 같은 형을 공유. 미래 분사는 futūrus(sum에서!) — 또 하나의 보충법. 형용동명사 faciendus는 faciō의 것; fīō 자체는 없다.
volō처럼 fīō는 라틴어 동사 체계가 깔끔한 격자가 아니라 음운·통사·역사적 우연으로 빚어진 살아 있는 모자이크임을 증언한다.

edō, edere/ēsse, ēdī, ēsum "eat" — third-conjugation verb with archaic alternative forms patterned on sum. The "regular" forms are edō, edis, edit, edimus, editis, edunt. The athematic alternatives — modeled on sum — are: ēs, ēst, ēstis (= edis, edit, editis); inf. ēsse (homophonous with the inf. of sum!); pres. subj. edim, edīs, edit, edīmus, edītis, edint. Both sets coexist in classical Latin; the athematic forms are slightly more archaic.
Compounds: comedō, comedere "consume", exedō "eat out, devour", peredō "eat through, consume utterly". They follow the same dual-pattern.
queō, quīre, quīvī "be able" and nequeō, nequīre, nequīvī "be unable" follow eō in inflection but with extreme defectiveness: many forms missing. Both are mostly poetic; possum covers their semantic territory in prose. The classical author Cicero rarely uses them.
Sum-family compounds (already mentioned in Lectiō XV): absum (be away), adsum (be present), dēsum (be lacking), īnsum (be in), intersum (be among), obsum (be against), praesum (be in charge), prōsum (benefit), subsum (be under), supersum (be left, survive). All conjugate like sum; prōsum inserts -d- before vowels: prōdes, prōdest, prōdesse.
These ten verbs together cover the irregular core of Latin's high-frequency verb system. Once mastered, they unlock the bulk of classical reading; their forms appear in every paragraph of Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil.
edō, edere/ēsse, ēdī, ēsum(먹다) — 제3활용 동사로 sum형 옛 대체 형들을 함께 가진다. "정규" 형: edō, edis, edit, edimus, editis, edunt.
Sum 합성어(Lectiō XV에서 이미 언급): absum(없다·떠나 있다), adsum(있다·도와 있다), dēsum(부족하다), īnsum(안에 있다), intersum(가운데 있다), obsum(반대하다), praesum(앞에 있다·지휘하다), prōsum(유익하다), subsum(밑에 있다), supersum(남다·살아남다). 모두 sum처럼 활용; prōsum은 모음 앞에 -d-를 끼움: prōdes, prōdest, prōdesse.
이 열 동사가 모여 라틴어 고빈도 동사 체계의 불규칙 핵심을 이룬다. 일단 숙달하면 고전 독해의 대부분을 풀어 준다 — 카이사르·키케로·베르길리우스의 모든 단락에 그 형들이 등장한다.
