부사 — 정의·형성
English

An adverb (adverbium) is an indeclinable word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb. The name adverbium = "to (the) verb" reflects its main role: celeriter currit "he runs quickly" — celeriter modifies currit. But adverbs also modify adjectives (valdē fortis "very brave") and other adverbs (valdē celeriter "very quickly").

Latin adverbs are most often formed regularly from adjectives, by adding endings to the adjective stem. The two main patterns:

(1) From 1·2-decl. adjectives, by adding to the stem: longus → longē "(at a) long (distance), far"; cārus → cārē "dearly"; pulcher → pulchrē "beautifully"; doctus → doctē "learnedly". The is long and stressed.

(2) From 3-decl. adjectives, by adding -(i)ter to the stem: fortis → fortiter "bravely"; ācer → ācriter "sharply"; celer → celeriter "swiftly"; audāx → audācter "boldly"; prūdēns → prūdenter "prudently".

Some are old fixed forms: bene "well" (cf. bonus), male "badly", facile "easily" (= neuter sg. of facilis), multum "much", multō "by much", parum "too little", magnopere "greatly".

Adverbs may also be derived directly from nouns or from frozen case-forms (relics of an earlier productive process):

forte "by chance" (= ablative of fors).
noctū "at night" (frozen ablative of nox).
diū "for a long time" (originally ablative).
iūre "rightfully" (ablative of iūs).
iniūriā "wrongfully" (ablative of iniūria).
"by force" (ablative of vīs).
cāsū "by chance" (ablative of cāsus).

This last group (frozen cases) reveals a historical fact: many Latin adverbs are essentially fossilized noun-cases that have lost their grammatical productivity but retained their meaning.

(2) 3격변화 형용사로부터 어간 + -(i)ter: fortis → fortiter(용감히); ācer → ācriter(날카로이); celer → celeriter(빠르게); audāx → audācter(대담히); prūdēns → prūdenter(신중히).

일부는 옛 고정 형: bene(잘)(bonus로부터), male(나쁘게), facile(쉽게)(= facilis의 중성 단수), multum(많이), multō(훨씬), parum(너무 적게), magnopere(크게).

부사는 명사에서 직접 또는 굳어진 격형으로부터도 만들어진다 (예전 생산적 과정의 흔적):

forte(우연히)(= fors의 탈격).

§ 237
Comparison of Adverbs
부사의 비교
English

Adverbs are compared parallel to adjectives — and from the same stems. The rule:

Comparative = neuter accusative singular of the comparative adjective. Hence: longus → longius (n. acc. of longior) "more, more at length"; fortis → fortius "more bravely"; celer → celerius "more swiftly"; bonus → melius "better"; malus → peius "worse".

Superlative = ends in , formed from the superlative adjective. longissimus → longissimē "most far"; fortissimus → fortissimē "most bravely"; celerrimus → celerrimē "most swiftly"; optimus → optimē "best"; pessimus → pessimē "worst".

Irregular comparisons (parallel to adjective irregulars):

bene → melius → optimē (well, better, best).
male → peius → pessimē (badly, worse, worst).
multum → plūs → plūrimum (much, more, most).
parum → minus → minimē (too little, less, least).
magnopere → magis → maximē (greatly, more, most).
diū → diūtius → diūtissimē (long in time, longer, longest).
saepe → saepius → saepissimē (often, oftener, oftenest).
prope → propius → proximē (near, nearer, nearest).

The double-stem adverbs magis and maximē ("more, most") play a key role in periphrastic comparison: when an adjective in -eus, -ius, -uus cannot easily form -ior, Latin uses magis idōneus "more suitable" — and the same applies to adverbs.

한국어

부사는 형용사와 평행하게 — 같은 어간으로부터 — 비교한다. 규칙:

비교급 = 비교급 형용사의 중성 대격 단수. 따라서: longus → longius(longior의 중성 대격)(더 멀리); fortis → fortius(더 용감히); celer → celerius(더 빠르게); bonus → melius(더 잘); malus → peius(더 나쁘게).

최상급 = 로 끝남, 최상급 형용사로부터. longissimus → longissimē(가장 멀리); fortissimus → fortissimē(가장 용감히); celerrimus → celerrimē(가장 빠르게); optimus → optimē(가장 잘); pessimus → pessimē(가장 나쁘게).

불규칙 비교 (형용사 불규칙과 평행):

bene → melius → optimē(잘·더 잘·가장 잘).
male → peius → pessimē(나쁘게·더 나쁘게·가장 나쁘게).
multum → plūs → plūrimum(많이·더·가장 많이).
parum → minus → minimē(너무 적게·덜·가장 적게).
magnopere → magis → maximē(크게·더·가장 크게).
diū → diūtius → diūtissimē(오래·더 오래·가장 오래).
saepe → saepius → saepissimē(자주·더 자주·가장 자주).
prope → propius → proximē(가까이·더 가까이·가장 가까이).

이중 어간 부사 magis·maximē(더·가장)는 우회 비교에 핵심 역할: -eus, -ius, -uus로 끝나는 형용사가 -ior를 쉽게 만들지 못할 때 라틴어는 magis idōneus(더 적합한)를 쓰며, 같은 원리가 부사에도 적용된다.

Question · Answer · Conjunctive Adverbs
의문·답변·연결 부사
English

Interrogative adverbs: nōnne "is it not?" (expects yes — formal/legal); num "is it really?" (expects no — skeptical); enclitic -ne (neutral, attached to first emphasized word: amatne? "does he love?"); cur, quārē, quamobrem "why?"; quōmodo "how?"; ubī "where?"; quandō "when?"; quōrsum "to what end?"; quotiēs "how often?"; quamdiū "how long?".

"Yes" and "No" in Latin: there are no fixed words for "yes" and "no". Latin echoes the verb: "Did you go?" — "I went" / "I did not go": īstī? — īvī. / nōn īvī. When affirmation or denial is needed without echoing, particles serve:

Affirmative: certē, sānē, ita, etiam, vērō, ita est, sīc.
Negative: nōn, minimē, nēquāquam.

Conjunctive adverbs (logical connectors): they link clauses and sentences with a logical relation, comparable to English "therefore, however, also":

Inferential: itaque "therefore, accordingly", igitur "therefore" (postpositive), ergō "therefore", ideō "for that reason", proinde "therefore", quārē "wherefore".
Adversative: tamen "however, nevertheless", autem "but, however" (postpositive), at "but", vērum "but truly".
Additive: etiam "also, even", quoque "too, also" (postpositive after the word it emphasizes), īnsuper "moreover", praetereā "besides".
Sequential: tum, deinde, posteā "then, afterwards"; antea "before"; prīmum "first"; postrēmō "lastly".
Explanatory: nam, namque, enim "for" (enim postpositive), nempe "to be sure".

The postpositive position of autem, igitur, enim, vērō, quoque is a hallmark of Latin word-order: these particles never start a clause but always come second (or after the emphasized word).

— īvī. / nōn īvī. 메아리 없이 긍정·부정이 필요할 때 소사가 봉사한다:

긍정: certē, sānē, ita, etiam, vērō, ita est, sīc.
부정: nōn, minimē, nēquāquam.

연결 부사(논리 연결어): 절·문장을 논리적 관계로 잇는다, 한국어 "그러므로·그러나·또한"에 해당:

추론: itaque(그러므로·따라서), igitur(그러므로 — 후치), ergō(그러므로), ideō(그 이유로), proinde(그러므로), quārē(그래서·왜냐하면).
역접: tamen(그러나·그럼에도), autem(그런데·그러나 — 후치), at(그러나), vērum(그러나 진실로).
첨가: etiam(또한·심지어), quoque(도·또한 — 강조된 단어 뒤에), īnsuper(게다가), praetereā(그 밖에).
순서: tum, deinde, posteā(그때·그 후); antea(이전); prīmum(처음); postrēmō(마지막으로).
설명: nam, namque, enim(왜냐하면)(enim는 후치), nempe(확실히).

autem, igitur, enim, vērō, quoque의 후치 위치는 라틴어 어순의 표지: 이 소사들은 절을 시작하지 않고 항상 두 번째 (또는 강조된 단어 뒤)에 온다.

Prepositions · Case-Government Principle
전치사 — 격 지배 원칙
English

A preposition (praepositiō) is an indeclinable word placed before a noun (or pronoun) to clarify its relation to the rest of the sentence. The name praepositiō = "placed before" reflects the standard pre-noun position; in poetry and elevated prose, prepositions can occasionally follow their noun (anastrophe).

Latin prepositions govern the accusative or the ablative — never the dative or genitive. (Phrases like causā, grātiā with the genitive — "for the sake of", "by reason of" — are postpositional and not true prepositions; they descend from old noun ablatives that lost their grammatical productivity.)

A few prepositions take either case, with a difference of meaning:

in + abl. = "in" (location, static): in urbe "in the city".
in + acc. = "into" (motion toward): in urbem "into the city".

sub + abl. = "under" (location): sub arbore "under the tree".
sub + acc. = "to under" (motion): sub arborem "(in motion) under the tree".

super with both: abl. = "concerning, about" (rare); acc. = "over, above" (motion or location).

subter: acc. = "under" (motion); abl. = "under" (location). Both rare in classical prose.

The principle: ablative for static location, accusative for direction or duration. This dichotomy reflects the original ablative's locative force vs. the accusative's "extent" force.

Most prepositions emerge historically from old adverbs of place or time, fossilized as governing words. Some retain adverbial uses alongside their prepositional ones: ante "before" (prep. + acc.) but also "previously" (adv.); circum "around" (prep.) but also "all around" (adv.).

in + 탈격 = "안에"(위치, 정적): in urbe(도시 안에).
  in + 대격 = "안으로"(방향, 운동): in urbem(도시 안으로).
