The Infinitive · Six Forms
부정사 — 6 형태
English

The infinitive (īnfīnītīvus) is a verbal noun — neuter in gender, indeclinable, naming the action without person or number. It is etymologically a "non-finite" form (Lat. īnfīnītus "unbounded") because it does not specify subject person or number, only the action itself.

Latin has six infinitives, distributed across present, perfect, future tenses and active and passive voices:

(1) Present activeamāre, monēre, regere, capere, audīre "to love, warn, rule, seize, hear"; for sum: esse.
(2) Present passiveamārī, monērī, regī, capī, audīrī "to be loved...". 1·2·4 conj. add -rī; 3·3-iō conj. just .
(3) Perfect activeamāvisse, monuisse, rēxisse, cēpisse, audīvisse "to have loved..."; fuisse for sum.
(4) Perfect passive — periphrastic: perfect passive participle + esse: amātus esse "to have been loved".
(5) Future active — periphrastic: future active participle + esse: amātūrus esse "to be about to love"; futūrum esse or fore for sum.
(6) Future passive — supine + īrī (rare): amātum īrī "to be about to be loved". This is a fossil; classical writers prefer fore ut + subj.: fore ut amētur.

The infinitive serves three principal syntactic functions: as subject of an impersonal verb; as object/complement of certain verbs; as the verb of indirect statement (with accusative subject — see Lectiō XXXII).

Note The future passive infinitive amātum īrī is built from supine + present passive infinitive of ("to go") — literally "to go to be loved". It is rare and somewhat artificial; most classical Latin uses fore ut + subj.: spērō fore ut hostēs vincantur "I hope (it will come to pass) that the enemy will be conquered". The future-active fore for esse is also a unique alternative: fore = "to be about to be" = futūrum esse.
미래 수동 부정사 amātum īrī는 목적분사 + (가다)의 현재 수동 부정사로 만든다 — 글자 그대로 "사랑받기로 가다". 드물고 다소 인위적; 대부분의 고전 라틴어는 fore ut + 접속법을 사용: spērō fore ut hostēs vincantur(적이 정복되기를 바란다). esse의 미래 fore도 독특한 대안: fore = "있게 되리라" = futūrum esse.

Syntax of the Infinitive · Subject · Complement · Indirect Statement
부정사의 통사 — 주어·보충어·간접 진술
English

Infinitive as subject: with impersonal verbs (licet, oportet, decet, libet, placet, iuvat, opus est, necesse est), the infinitive serves as logical subject. The infinitive's "subject" (the person performing) appears in the accusative or dative depending on the verb:

licet mihi īre "to-go is permitted to me / I may go" (dative person, infinitive subject).
oportet tē venīre "to-come is incumbent on you / you ought to come" (accusative person, infinitive with subject).

Infinitive as complement (object): completes the meaning of certain verbs of ability, willingness, beginning, ceasing, daring, knowing-how, learning, being able. The subject of the infinitive is implicit (= subject of main verb).

Common verbs taking complementary infinitive: possum (be able), volō (wish), nōlō (be unwilling), mālō (prefer), cōnor (try), cupiō (desire), incipiō (begin), dēsinō (cease), audeō (dare), statuō (decide), cōnstituō (resolve), sciō (know how), discō (learn), doceō (teach), iubeō (order — with acc.+inf.), parō (prepare), dubitō (hesitate).

Examples: fugere possum "I can flee"; scrībere volō "I wish to write"; cōnātur dīcere "he is trying to speak"; incēpit cantāre "he began to sing".

Indirect statement: after verbs of saying, thinking, perceiving, knowing, etc., the reported clause becomes accusative + infinitive. The original verb's subject becomes accusative; the verb itself becomes infinitive (with relative tense). Fully treated in Lectiō XXXII.

한국어

주어로서의 부정사: 비인칭 동사(licet, oportet, decet, libet, placet, iuvat, opus est, necesse est)와 함께, 부정사가 논리적 주어가 된다. 부정사의 "주어"(행위자)는 동사에 따라 대격이나 여격으로 나타난다:

licet mihi īre(가는 것이 내게 허락된다 / 나는 가도 된다)(여격 사람, 부정사 주어).
oportet tē venīre(네가 와야 한다)(대격 사람, 주어를 가진 부정사).

예: fugere possum(나는 도망갈 수 있다); scrībere volō(쓰기를 원한다); cōnātur dīcere(말하려 시도하고 있다); incēpit cantāre(노래하기 시작했다).

간접 진술: 말하기·생각하기·지각·알기 동사 뒤에서 보고된 절이 대격 + 부정사가 된다. 원래 동사의 주어는 대격이 되고, 동사는 부정사가 된다 (상대 시제와). Lectiō XXXII에서 완전히 다룸.

Participles · Four Forms
분사 — 4 형태
English

The participle (participium) is a verbal adjective, agreeing with its noun in gender, number, and case while retaining the verb's tense, voice, and ability to take objects/complements. Latin has four participles, distributed across active/passive and tense:

(1) Present activeamāns, -antis "loving"; declines like prūdēns (3rd-decl., one-ending).
(2) Future activeamātūrus, -a, -um "about to love, going to love"; declines like bonus.
(3) Perfect passiveamātus, -a, -um "(having been) loved"; like bonus.
(4) Future passive (gerundive)amandus, -a, -um "to be loved, requiring loving"; like bonus. Also functions adjectivally as the gerundive (treated separately below).

Latin lacks:
• Present passive participle (no equivalent of "being loved").
• Perfect active participle (deponent verbs supply this gap with their perfect participles, which are passive in form but active in meaning).

The two missing participles must be periphrasised in Latin: "while loving (passive)" → cum amārētur; "having loved" → cum amāvisset; or restructured with relative clauses or perfect tenses.

The deponent verbs are useful precisely because they fill these gaps: locūtus "having spoken" is morphologically passive but functions as the perfect active participle that ordinary verbs lack.

Participle Syntax · Tense · Voice
분사의 통사 — 시제·태
English

The participle's tense is relative to the main verb: present participle = simultaneous with the main action; perfect participle = prior; future participle = subsequent.

Caesar veniēns vidit hostēs "Caesar, (while) coming, saw the enemy" (simultaneous, present participle).
Caesar oppidum captum incendit "Caesar burned the captured town" (prior, perfect passive).
moritūrus tē salūtō "(I) about to die salute you" (subsequent, future active — gladiator's salute).

Participles can serve multiple syntactic roles:

(a) Attributive: like ordinary adjectives, modifying a noun: vir loquēns "a speaking man"; oppidum captum "the captured town".

(b) Substantival: used as a noun: amāns "a lover"; moriēns "a dying person"; capta (f.) "a captive woman"; fugientēs "the fleeing (men)".

(c) Predicative: with a linking verb or as predicate: fessus est "he is tired" (fessus as adj.); amātus est "he was loved" (forming the perfect passive periphrasis).

(d) Adverbial: equivalent to a temporal, causal, concessive, or conditional clause: territī fūgērunt "frightened, they fled" (= "because they were frightened" or "after they had been frightened").

(e) Ablative absolute: an entire clause built around a participle in the ablative; see Lectiō XXVIII. urbe captā, hostēs fūgērunt "the city having been captured, the enemy fled".

The future active participle is the basis of the active periphrastic conjugation: amātūrus sum "I am about to love"; amātūrus eram "I was about to love". This conjugation is somewhat rare and emphatic.

한국어

분사의 시제는 주동사에 대한 상대 시제: 현재 분사 = 주행위와 동시; 완료 분사 = 이전; 미래 분사 = 이후.

Caesar veniēns vidit hostēs(카이사르가 (오는 도중에) 적을 보았다)(동시, 현재 분사).
Caesar oppidum captum incendit(카이사르가 잡힌 도시를 불태웠다)(이전, 완료 수동).
moritūrus tē salūtō(죽으러 가는 (내가) 너를 인사한다)(이후, 미래 능동 — 검투사의 인사).

분사는 여러 통사 역할을 할 수 있다:

(가) 한정적: 보통 형용사처럼, 명사 수식: vir loquēns(말하는 남자); oppidum captum(잡힌 도시).

(나) 명사적: 명사처럼: amāns(연인); moriēns(죽어가는 자); capta(여)(잡힌 여자); fugientēs(도망치는 자들).

Gerund · Verbal Noun in Four Cases
동명사 — 동사의 명사화 (4 격)
English

The gerund (gerundium) is a verbal noun — neuter, second declension — supplying the cases that the present infinitive cannot take. The gerund exists only in four cases (genitive, dative, accusative, ablative) and only in the singular; it has no nominative (the present infinitive supplies that role: amāre est dulce "to love is sweet").

Forms: stem + -nd- + 2nd-decl. neuter endings (-ī, -ō, -um, -ō):
I conj.: amandī, amandō, amandum, amandō.
II conj.: monendī... III conj.: regendī... III-iō: capiendī... IV: audiendī...

The gerund retains the verb's ability to take an object — and this is where it competes with the gerundive (next section).

Common uses:

(a) Genitive: with nouns expressing causation/purpose: cupiditās discendī "desire of/for learning"; ars scrībendī "the art of writing"; tempus pugnandī "time for fighting".

(b) Dative: with adjectives of fitness, also for purpose: aptus pugnandō "fit for fighting"; sōlemne sacrificandō "for sacrificing".

(c) Accusative: only with ad for purpose: ad discendum "for the purpose of learning, in order to learn"; ad pugnandum "for fighting".

(d) Ablative: of means: discendō discimus "we learn by learning"; or with prepositions in, ex, dē: in legendō "in (the act of) reading"; ex audiendō "from listening"; dē hoc loquendō "from speaking about this".

한국어

동명사 (gerundium)는 동사적 명사 — 중성·제2격변화 — 현재 부정사가 가질 수 없는 격을 보충한다. 4 격(속·여·대·탈)만 존재하고, 단수만 있다. 주격은 없다 — 현재 부정사가 그 자리를 메움: amāre est dulce(사랑함은 달콤하다).

형: 어간 + -nd- + 2격변화 중성 어미 (-ī, -ō, -um, -ō):
1활용: amandī, amandō, amandum, amandō.

(다) 대격: ad와 함께만, 목적 표시: ad discendum(배우기 위해); ad pugnandum(싸우기 위해).

(라) 탈격: 수단: discendō discimus(배움으로써 배운다); 또는 전치사 in, ex, dē와: in legendō(읽음에서); ex audiendō(들음으로부터); dē hoc loquendō(이것에 대해 말함에서).

Gerundive · Future Passive Participle
형용동명사 (gerundīvum)
English

The gerundive (gerundīvum) is identical in form to the gerund but is a passive verbal adjective — agreeing with a noun in gender, number, and case. It carries the sense "to be (X-ed)", "deserving (X)", or expressing necessity / obligation.

amandus puer "a boy to be loved / a lovable boy"; liber legendus "a book to be read / worth reading".

The gerundive substitutes for the gerund whenever the gerund would govern an accusative direct object. This is the most distinctive feature:

Substitution rule: instead of cupiditās librum legendī ("desire of reading a book", lit. "of-reading [acc.] a book"), Latin prefers cupiditās librī legendī ("desire of a book to-be-read", with the noun in the genitive and the gerundive agreeing).

Both constructions mean the same thing, but the gerundive construction is decisively more common in classical prose. The gerund-with-direct-object construction is found chiefly in poetry and early Latin.

Passive periphrastic conjugation: gerundive + form of sum = "must be (X-ed)", with the agent in the dative:

liber legendus est mihi "the book must be read by me / I must read the book".
cōnsulendum est tibi "you must take counsel".
Carthāgō dēlenda est "Carthage must be destroyed" (Cato's famous closing of every senate speech).

This is the standard Latin idiom for obligation, central to Cicero's ethical and political prose.

한국어

형용동명사·동사적 형용사 (gerundīvum)는 동명사와 형이 같으나 수동 동사적 형용사로, 명사와 성·수·격에서 일치한다. "~되어야 할", "~할 만한", 또는 필요·의무를 표현한다.

amandus puer(사랑받을 소년 / 사랑스러운 소년); liber legendus(읽혀야 할 책 / 읽을 만한 책).

liber legendus est mihi(나에 의해 책이 읽혀야 한다 → 내가 책을 읽어야 한다).
cōnsulendum est tibi(네가 의논해야 한다).
Carthāgō dēlenda est(카르타고는 멸해야 한다 — 카토가 모든 원로원 연설을 마무리한 유명한 구).

이는 라틴어의 의무 표현 정규 관용으로, 키케로의 윤리·정치 산문의 중심.

The supine (supīnum) is a verbal noun of the fourth declension, surviving in only two cases: accusative singular in -um and ablative singular in . It is the fourth principal part of every Latin verb:

amātum, amātū; monitum, monitū; rēctum, rēctū; captum, captū; audītum, audītū.

Accusative supine (in -um): expresses purpose after verbs of motion. vēnit oppidum oppugnātum "he came to attack the town" (lit. "he came [for the purpose of] attacking the town"). The construction is rare in classical prose; ad+gerund/gerundive or ut+subjunctive ordinarily replaces it. It survives mainly in:
• Stock idioms: cubitum īre "to go to bed"; spectātum venīre "to come to watch (a show)"; petītum venīre "to come to seek".
• The future passive infinitive periphrasis: amātum īrī.

Ablative supine (in ): used after a few adjectives ("ablative of respect/specification") and with opus est:
mīrābile dictū "wonderful to say (= in the speaking)";
facile factū "easy to do (= in the doing)";
turpe audītū "disgraceful to hear";
incrēdibile vīsū "incredible to see".
scītū opus est "it is worthwhile to know".

The ablative supine is more frequent than the accusative in classical Latin; both have an archaic flavor and concentrate in specific stylistic registers.

한국어

목적분사 (supīnum)는 제4격변화 동사적 명사로, 두 격만 살아남았다: 대격 단수 -um, 탈격 단수 . 모든 라틴어 동사의 4번째 주요부:

amātum, amātū; monitum, monitū; rēctum, rēctū; captum, captū; audītum, audītū.

대격 목적분사(-um): 운동 동사 뒤에서 목적을 표현한다. vēnit oppidum oppugnātum(그가 도시를 공격하러 왔다 — 글자 그대로 "도시를 공격하기 위해"). 고전 산문에서는 드물고, ad+동명사/형용동명사나 ut+접속법이 보통 대체한다. 다음에서 살아남음:
• 상투 관용: cubitum īre(잠자리에 들다); spectātum venīre(공연을 보러 오다); petītum venīre(청하러 오다).
• 미래 수동 부정사 우회: amātum īrī.

탈격 목적분사(): 몇몇 형용사 뒤에서 ("관점·한정 탈격"), opus est와 함께 사용:
mīrābile dictū(말하기에 놀라운 — "말함에서");
facile factū(하기에 쉬운 — "행함에서");
turpe audītū(듣기에 추한);
incrēdibile vīsū(보기에 믿기 어려운).
scītū opus est(아는 것이 필요하다).

고전 라틴어에서는 탈격 목적분사가 대격보다 더 자주 쓰인다. 둘 다 옛 풍이 있고, 특정 문체 영역에 집중된다.
