A&G §§ 115-122 · pp. 54-60
§ 115
Three Sub-Classes of 3rd-Decl. Adjectives
제3격변화 형용사의 세 분류
English

Adjectives of the third declension are i-stems and fall into three classes according to how many distinct nominative singular forms they show. The classification reflects an old Indo-European pattern: originally each gender had its own form, but Latin's declensional history has merged some of them.

(I) Three-ending adjectives — distinct masculine, feminine, and neuter in the nominative singular: ācer, ācris, ācre "sharp". Few in number; mostly month-names (September, October) and a small set of descriptive adjectives.

(II) Two-ending adjectives — masculine and feminine identical (-is), neuter different (-e): fortis, forte "strong, brave". The largest class — many hundred words. The form fortis is masc.+fem.; forte is neuter.

(III) One-ending adjectives — single nominative singular for all three genders, with the genitive supplied separately: vetus, veteris (cons.-stem); audāx, audācis (i-stem); prūdēns, prūdentis (i-stem, -ns participle-type). All three genders share the nom. sg. form, but inflect differently in some other forms (especially the neuter, which has its own nom./acc.).

The "one-ending" class is the most morphologically diverse internally:

• Most are i-stems (gen. pl. -ium, abl. sg. when adjectival, n. pl. -ia): audāx, fēlīx, ferōx, ingēns, prūdēns, sapiēns.
• A few preserve consonantal inflection (gen. pl. -um, abl. sg. -e, n. pl. -a): vetus, dīves, pauper, prīnceps, particeps, sospes.

The distinction matters for proper Latin reading and writing: fortis is i-stem with all i-stem features; vetus looks similar but inflects differently and resists the i-stem patterns.

About a dozen adjectives follow this 3-ending type, mostly month-names and a few descriptive:

• Month-names: September, October, November, December. (Note: Iānuārius, Februārius, Mārtius, Aprīlis follow other patterns.)
• Descriptive: celer, celeris, celere "swift"; alacer, alacris, alacre "eager"; volucer, volucris, volucre "winged"; ēquester, ēquestris, ēquestre "equestrian, of the cavalry"; palūster, palūstris, palūstre "marshy"; silvester, silvestris, silvestre "sylvan, wooded".

The pattern can be summarized: nominative singular masculine ends in -er, sometimes preserving and sometimes dropping the e; feminine ends in -(e)ris; neuter ends in -(e)re. Apart from these three nominative singular forms, the declension is identical to fortis.

Note · vetus The starred forms show vetus's consonant-stem features: gen. pl. -um (not -ium), nom./acc. pl. neuter vetera (not *veteria), abl. sg. -e (not ). Likewise dīves, dīvitis "rich" and pauper, pauperis "poor" keep consonant inflection. The contrast with audāx (i-stem all the way) is significant for accurate reading.
주 · vetus 표시된 형들이 vetus의 자음어간 특징을 보여준다: 속격 복수 -um(-ium 아님), 중성 복수 주·대격 vetera(*veteria 아님), 탈격 단수 -e( 아님). dīves, dīvitis(부유한)·pauper, pauperis(가난한)도 자음어간 유지. audāx(완전 i-어간)과의 대비가 정확한 독해에 중요하다.
English

The ablative singular has special significance:

• Used adjectivally (modifying a noun) → : ā fortī mīlite "by a brave soldier".
• Used substantively (as a noun) → -e: ā sapiente "by a wise person".
• In the ablative absolute with a participle → -e: amante "with a lover loving" (rare construction).

This subtle distinction is rigorously maintained in classical Latin and is one of the marks of accurate writing.

한국어

탈격 단수가 특별한 의미를 가진다:

형용사로(명사 수식) → : ā fortī mīlite(용감한 병사에 의해).
명사로(자체로) → -e: ā sapiente(현자에 의해).
분사 절대 탈격에서 → -e: amante(사랑하는 자가 사랑하는 채로)(드문 구문).

이 미묘한 구별은 고전 라틴어에서 엄격히 유지되며, 정확한 작문의 표지 중 하나다.

§ 119
Substantive Use
3격변화 형용사의 명사적 활용
English

As with 1·2-decl. adjectives, 3rd-decl. adjectives readily serve as nouns. The masculine usually denotes a male person; the feminine, a female; the neuter, a thing or quality.

Examples:

fortis "a brave (man)"; fortēs "the brave (men)".
animālia "animals" (n. pl. of animālis, animāle).
parentēs "parents" (m./f. pl. of parēns, parentis "begetter").
amantēs "lovers" (m./f. pl. of amāns, amantis).
omnia "all things" (n. pl. of omnis, omne).
sapiēns "a wise man" (substantival use of the adjective sapiēns, -entis).

When substantivized, the ablative singular is usually in -e rather than : ab amante "by a lover"; ā sapiente "by a wise man". This rule helps distinguish substantival from adjectival use in writing.

Some adjectives have become essentially fixed nouns: parēns (parent), īnfāns (infant), adolēscēns (young man), iuvenis (young man), senex (old man). These typically appear in dictionaries with their own entries even though their adjectival origins remain visible.

한국어

1·2격변화 형용사와 마찬가지로, 3격변화 형용사도 자유롭게 명사처럼 쓰인다. 남성은 보통 남성 인물, 여성은 여성, 중성은 사물·성질.

예:

fortis(용감한 (남자)); fortēs(용감한 (남자)들).
animālia(동물들)(animālis, animāle의 중복).
parentēs(부모들)(parēns, parentis(낳는 자)의 남·여복).
amantēs(연인들)(amāns, amantis의 남·여복).
omnia(모든 것)(omnis, omne의 중복).
sapiēns(현자)(sapiēns, -entis 형용사의 명사적 사용).

명사화될 때 탈격 단수는 보다 -e: ab amante(연인에 의해); ā sapiente(현자에 의해). 이 규칙이 작문에서 명사적/형용사적 사용을 구별하는 데 도움이 된다.

일부 형용사는 본질적으로 고정 명사가 되었다: parēns(부모), īnfāns(유아), adolēscēns(청년), iuvenis(청년), senex(노인). 이들은 형용사적 기원이 여전히 보이지만 보통 사전에 자기 표제어를 가진다.

§ 120
Participles as Adjectives
분사의 형용사 활용
English

Latin's participles serve as adjectives and decline accordingly:

(1) Present-active participles in -ns, -ntis: amāns (loving), regēns (ruling), audiēns (hearing), capiēns (seizing). They decline like prūdēns — i-stem one-ending. Adjectival ablative singular: ; substantival: -e.

(2) Future-active participles in -ūrus, -a, -um: amātūrus (about to love), rectūrus (about to rule). They decline like 1·2-decl. adjectives — like bonus.

(3) Perfect-passive participles in -tus / -sus + -a, -um: amātus (loved), rectus (ruled), victus (conquered). Decline like bonus.

(4) Future-passive participles (gerundives) in -ndus, -a, -um: amandus (to be loved), regendus (to be ruled). Decline like bonus.

Each participle, while functioning as an adjective, retains the verb's tense and voice, and can govern objects. Thus amāns Caesarem "loving Caesar" — the participle agrees with its noun in gender/number/case but governs Caesarem as direct object.

The participle is the bridge between the verbal and adjectival systems of Latin, and is treated more fully in Lectiō XVIII.

(3) 완료 수동 분사 -tus / -sus + -a, -um: amātus(사랑받은), rectus(다스려진), victus(정복된). bonus처럼.

(4) 미래 수동 분사 (형용동명사) -ndus, -a, -um: amandus(사랑받아야 할), regendus(다스려져야 할). bonus처럼.

각 분사는 형용사로 기능하면서 동사의 시제·태를 유지하고 목적어를 받을 수 있다. 따라서 amāns Caesarem(카이사르를 사랑하는) — 분사가 자기 명사와 성·수·격 일치하나 Caesarem을 직접목적어로 지배.

분사는 라틴어의 동사와 형용사 체계 사이의 다리이며, Lectiō XVIII에서 더 충실히 다룬다.
