Eight Classes of Pronouns
대명사의 8 분류
English

Latin pronouns fall into eight classes by function:

(1) Personal (prōnōmen persōnāle)ego "I", "you (sg.)", nōs "we", vōs "you (pl.)". No 3rd-person personal pronoun in Latin — its function is supplied by is, ea, id (a demonstrative).

(2) Reflexive (prōnōmen reflexīvum)suī: refers back to the subject of the clause. No nominative; same forms for sg. and pl. The 1st and 2nd person reflexive use the personal pronouns themselves (mē, tē, nōs, vōs) since context disambiguates.

(3) Possessive (prōnōmen possessīvum)meus, tuus, suus (reflexive), noster, vester. Adjectives in form, declining like bonus or pulcher.

(4) Demonstrative (prōnōmen dēmōnstrātīvum)hic "this (near me)", iste "that (near you)", ille "that (yonder)", is "this/that, he/she/it" (anaphoric), īdem "the same".

(5) Intensive (prōnōmen intēnsīvum)ipse "self": adds emphasis to a noun or pronoun. NOT reflexive (that's suī); it stresses identity.

(6) Interrogative (prōnōmen interrogātīvum)quis, quid (substantive: "who?, what?"); quī, quae, quod (adjectival: "which?").

(7) Relative (prōnōmen relātīvum)quī, quae, quod: introduces relative clauses. Same form as adjectival interrogative but in different syntactic position.

(8) Indefinite (prōnōmen indēfīnītum)aliquis, quīdam, quisquam, nēmō, nūllus, nōnnūllus, quisque, quīvīs, quīlibet: refer to unspecified persons or things.

Several pronouns share the same root qu- (interrogative, relative, indefinite); their distinct functions are clarified by syntactic position and accompanying particles (-dam, -piam, -quam, -libet, -vīs).

(3) 소유 (prōnōmen possessīvum)meus, tuus, suus(재귀), noster, vester. 형태상 형용사이며 bonuspulcher처럼 곡용.

(4) 지시 (prōnōmen dēmōnstrātīvum)hic(이것 — 1인칭 가까이), iste(그것 — 2인칭 가까이), ille(저것 — 멀리), is(그·그녀·그것·이 — 조응적), īdem(같은 것).

(5) 강조 (prōnōmen intēnsīvum)ipse("자기 자신·바로"): 명사·대명사를 강조. 재귀가 아님(재귀는 suī); 정체성을 강조.

(6) 의문 (prōnōmen interrogātīvum)quis, quid(명사적: "누구?, 무엇?"); quī, quae, quod(형용사적: "어느?").

English

The personal pronouns are normally omitted as subjects since the verb-ending makes them explicit; they appear only for emphasis or contrast: ego veniō "I (myself) come"; tū vērō "you, however".

The genitive forms are not used as possessives: instead, the possessive adjectives meus, tuus, noster, vester are used. The genitive is used only for objective uses: meī memor "mindful of me"; amor patriae "love for the country" (though this uses patria's gen., not pronoun's).

The two genitive forms in 1st/2nd plural have different functions:
nostrī, vestrī: objective genitive ("of us, of you" — directed at us/you).
nostrum, vestrum: partitive genitive ("of us, among us / of you, among you").
So memoria nostrī "memory of us" but quis nostrum? "who of us?".

The reflexive suī has no nominative and no distinction between singular and plural. It always refers back to the subject of its clause: sē laudat "he praises himself"; sē laudant "they praise themselves". Distinguish from non-reflexive eum, eam, id (= "him, her, it" — different person from subject).

The forms mēcum, tēcum, sēcum, nōbīscum, vōbīscum are written as one word, the preposition cum appended to the pronoun. This is unique to cum and to personal pronouns; with other prepositions, normal spacing applies (ad mē, ab eō).

항상 절의 주어를 가리킨다: sē laudat(그가 자기를 칭찬한다); sē laudant(그들이 자기들을 칭찬한다). 비재귀 eum, eam, id(="그, 그녀, 그것" — 주어와 다른 사람)와 구별.

mēcum, tēcum, sēcum, nōbīscum, vōbīscum은 전치사 cum이 대명사 뒤에 붙어 한 단어로 쓰임. 이는 cum과 인칭대명사에 고유; 다른 전치사와는 정상 띄어쓰기(ad mē, ab eō).

§ 144
Possessive Pronouns
소유 대명사
English

Possessive pronouns are adjectives in form, agreeing with the thing possessed in gender, number, and case:

meus, mea, meum "my".
tuus, tua, tuum "your (sg.)".
suus, sua, suum "his/her/its/their (own — reflexive)".
noster, nostra, nostrum "our".
vester, vestra, vestrum "your (pl.)".

All decline like 1·2-decl. adjectives. noster, vester follow the pulcher pattern (e dropped). meus has the irregular vocative (vocative singular masculine): mī fīlī "my son!".

The agreement is with the possessed item, NOT the possessor: meus liber "my book" (m.sg., agreeing with liber); mea casa "my house" (f.sg., agreeing with casa).

suus is reflexive: it always refers to the subject of its clause. To express "his" (someone else's), Latin uses the genitive of the demonstrative is — namely eius:

Caesar suōs mīlitēs amat = "Caesar loves his (own = Caesar's) soldiers". Suōs reflexive.
Caesar eius mīlitēs amat = "Caesar loves his (someone else's) soldiers". Eius not reflexive.

This rigorous distinction is one of Latin's most precise grammatical features.

한국어

소유 대명사는 형태상 형용사로, 소유물과 성·수·격에서 일치:

meus, mea, meum(나의).
tuus, tua, tuum(너의).
suus, sua, suum(자기의 — 재귀).
noster, nostra, nostrum(우리의).
vester, vestra, vestrum(너희의).

Caesar suōs mīlitēs amat = "카이사르가 자기(=카이사르 자신의) 병사들을 사랑한다". Suōs 재귀.
Caesar eius mīlitēs amat = "카이사르가 그(다른 사람)의 병사들을 사랑한다". Eius 비재귀.

이 엄격한 구별은 라틴어의 가장 정밀한 문법 특징 중 하나다.

§ 145
★ Demonstratives · Complete · hic · iste · ille · is · īdem
★ 지시 대명사 — 완전 곡용
English

Latin has four primary demonstratives, expressing different deictic distances from the speaker, plus an "identity" demonstrative īdem:

hic, haec, hoc "this (near me)" — 1st-person deixis. Proximal. Used for things present, near the speaker, or just mentioned.

iste, ista, istud "that (near you)" — 2nd-person deixis. Often (but not always) with disparaging tone in Cicero: "that (one of yours)". Refers to things near the addressee.

ille, illa, illud "that (yonder)" — 3rd-person, distal deixis. Refers to things far from both speakers, or to famous/well-known persons. Sometimes laudatory ("the famous"): ille Cicerō "the famous Cicero".

is, ea, id "this/that, he/she/it" — anaphoric, weakly demonstrative. Refers back to something already mentioned. Supplies the missing 3rd-person pronoun in Latin: is dīxit "he said". Weakest of all demonstratives — almost a colorless pronoun.

īdem, eadem, idem "the same" — formed from is + -dem. The -dem is invariable; is, ea, id declines normally before it.

All five demonstratives share the UNUS NAUTA pattern: genitive singular in -īus, dative singular in (regardless of gender). This is one of Latin's most pervasive morphological patterns, shared with the nine "irregular" 1·2-decl. adjectives (Lectiō X § 112).

한국어

라틴어는 4 종의 지시 대명사를 가지며, 화자로부터의 직시 거리가 다르다 — 그리고 "동일성" 지시 īdem:

hic, haec, hoc("이것 — 1인칭 가까이") — 1인칭 직시. 근접. 현재하는, 화자 가까이의, 막 언급된 것에 사용.

iste, ista, istud("그것 — 2인칭 가까이") — 2인칭 직시. 키케로에서 흔히 (반드시는 아니나) 폄하 어조: "그(네 곁의 그것)". 청자 가까이의 것을 가리킴.

ille, illa, illud("저것 — 멀리") — 3인칭, 원격 직시. 두 화자 모두로부터 멀리, 또는 유명한 인물을 가리킴. 가끔 칭송 어조("저 유명한"): ille Cicerō(저 유명한 키케로).

is, ea, id("그·그녀·그것·이") — 조응적, 약한 지시. 이미 언급된 것을 가리킴. 라틴어에 없는 3인칭 대명사를 보충: is dīxit(그가 말했다). 모든 지시사 중 가장 약함 — 거의 색조 없는 대명사.

īdem, eadem, idem("같은 것") — is + -dem으로 만듦. -dem은 불변; is, ea, id가 그 앞에서 정상 곡용.

5 지시 대명사 모두 UNUS NAUTA 패턴을 공유: 속격 단수 -īus, 여격 단수 (성과 관계없이). 라틴어의 가장 광범위한 형태론 패턴 중 하나로, 9 "변칙" 1·2격변화 형용사(Lectiō X § 112)와 공유한다.

Phonology of īdem Note that m + d assimilates to nd in some forms: eum + dem → eundem; eam + dem → eandem; eōrum + dem → eōrundem; eārum + dem → eārundem. The n is purely phonetic — it represents the assimilation of m before d.
īdem 음운 일부 형에서 m + dnd로 동화된다: eum + dem → eundem; eam + dem → eandem; eōrum + dem → eōrundem; eārum + dem → eārundem. n은 순전히 음성적 — d 앞에서 m의 동화를 나타냄.
§ 146
Intensive · ipse, ipsa, ipsum
강조 — ipse(자기 자신)
English

ipse, ipsa, ipsum "self, very" — used to emphasize a noun or pronoun, NOT to express reflexivity. The contrast is essential:

Caesar sē laudat = "Caesar praises himself" (reflexive: subject = object).
Caesar ipse mē laudat = "Caesar himself praises me" (intensive: emphasizes that it's Caesar, not someone else).
Caesar sē ipse laudat = "Caesar himself praises himself" (both: ipse stresses, reflects).

Common uses:
ipse cōnsul "the consul himself".
ego ipse "I myself".
vōs ipsī "you yourselves".
verbum ipsum "the very word".
ipse rēx "the king in person".

The declension follows the UNUS NAUTA pattern with a special twist: like ille but with -um in nom./acc. neuter sg. (ipsum, NOT *ipsud). Otherwise identical to ille in pattern.

Ipse can also intensify a meaning: ipsum tempus "the very moment"; ad ipsam mortem "to the very point of death". This intensifying use makes ipse a versatile particle for stressing any element in a sentence.

한국어

ipse, ipsa, ipsum("자기 자신·바로") — 명사·대명사를 강조; 재귀를 표현하지 않음. 대비가 필수적이다:

Caesar sē laudat = "카이사르가 자기를 칭찬한다"(재귀: 주어 = 목적어).
Caesar ipse mē laudat = "카이사르 자신이 나를 칭찬한다"(강조: 다른 사람이 아니라 카이사르임을 강조).
Caesar sē ipse laudat = "카이사르 자신이 자기를 칭찬한다"(둘 다: ipse가 강조, 가 재귀).

흔한 사용:
ipse cōnsul(집정관 자신).
ego ipse(나 자신).
vōs ipsī(너희 자신들).
verbum ipsum(바로 그 말).
ipse rēx(왕 직접).

곡용은 UNUS NAUTA 패턴에 특별한 변칙: ille처럼이나 중성 단수 주·대격이 -um(ipsum, *ipsud 아님). 나머지는 ille와 패턴 동일.

Ipse는 의미를 강화할 수도: ipsum tempus(바로 그 순간); ad ipsam mortem(죽음의 바로 그 지점까지). 이 강조 사용은 ipse를 문장의 어떤 요소든 강조하는 다용도 소사로 만든다.

§§ 147-148
★ Interrogative · Relative · quis · quī
★ 의문·관계 대명사 — 완전 곡용
English

Latin has two distinct (but partially overlapping) qu- words:

quis, quid — substantive interrogative: "who?", "what?". Used alone, asking about identity. quis hoc dīxit? "Who said this?".

quī, quae, quod — adjectival interrogative ("which?") + relative ("who, which"). Used with a noun (interrogative) or after an antecedent (relative). quī mīles hoc fēcit? "Which soldier did this?"; mīles, quī hoc fēcit, vēnit "The soldier who did this came".

The two forms share most plural forms; they differ chiefly in the singular nominative (quis vs. quī) and accusative neuter (quid vs. quod).

Function distinctions:

(a) Substantive interrogative: stands alone, asks identity. quis vēnit? "Who came?"; quid vidēs? "What do you see?".

(b) Adjectival interrogative: with a noun, asks "which?". quī mīles? "Which soldier?"; quod opus? "Which work?".

(c) Relative: refers back to an antecedent, introduces a relative clause. vir quem amō "the man whom I love"; opus quod fēcī "the work that I did".

Tense and case in relative clauses follow strict rules: gender/number from antecedent, case from function within the relative clause.

Indefinite · Reciprocal · Pronominal Adjectives
부정·상호 대명사 · 대명사적 형용사
English

Indefinite pronouns are formed from the qu- root with various particles, each conveying a distinct semantic shade:

(a) Generic indefinitealiquis, aliquid "someone, something" (positive, generic). Plural aliquī. aliquis dīcit "someone says (or other)".

(b) Specific but unnamedquīdam, quaedam, quoddam "a certain one/thing" (specific, but the speaker doesn't reveal). quīdam vir "a certain man".

(c) Universal denial / "any whatever"quisquam, quidquam (or quicquam) "anyone, anything" (mostly in negative or quasi-negative contexts). nōn vēnit quisquam "no one came".

(d) Distributive "each"quisque, quaeque, quidque "each one" — every individual, taken severally. suum cuique "to each his own".

(e) Free choice "any"quīvīs, quaevīs, quodvīs and quīlibet "any you wish, any whatever". quīvīs cīvis "any citizen at all".

Negative indefinite:
nēmō "no one" (sg. only; supplied in plural by nūllī). Genitive nūllīus from nūllus; ablative nūllō; otherwise nēminem, nēminī.
nihil "nothing" (indecl.).
nūllus, -a, -um "no, none" — declines like ūnus.
nōnnūllus "some, several" (= nōn nūllus "not none"); nōnnēmō "some person".

Reciprocals are expressed by repetition or by alter...alter ("the one ... the other") and alius...alius ("one ... another"):
amant inter sē "they love one another" (using inter+reflexive).
alter alterum amat "each loves the other".
aliī aliīs nocent "some harm others".

Pronominal adjectives — adjectives that decline like pronouns (UNUS NAUTA pattern, gen. -īus, dat. ): all five demonstratives plus ipse and the nine UNUS NAUTA adjectives (Lectiō X § 112: ūnus, sōlus, tōtus, ūllus, nūllus, alius, alter, uter, neuter).

한국어

부정 대명사qu- 어근에 다양한 소사를 결합하여 만들며, 각각 미묘한 의미 차이를 전달:

(가) 총칭적 부정aliquis, aliquid(누구·무엇 — 긍정·총칭). 복수 aliquī. aliquis dīcit(누군가가 말한다).

(나) 특정하나 이름 안 댐quīdam, quaedam, quoddam(어떤 — 특정하나 화자가 밝히지 않음). quīdam vir(어떤 남자).

(다) 보편적 부정 / "어떤 것이든"quisquam, quidquam(quicquam)(누구·무엇 — 부정·준부정 문맥). nōn vēnit quisquam(아무도 안 왔다).

(라) 분배적 "각자"quisque, quaeque, quidque(각자 — 모든 개인, 개별로). suum cuique(각자에게 그의 것).

(마) 자유 선택 "어떤 것이든"quīvīs, quaevīs, quodvīs·quīlibet(누구든·어떤 것이든). quīvīs cīvis(어떤 시민이든).

부정 부정 대명사:
nēmō(아무도 — 단수만, 복수는 nūllī로). 속격 nūllīus(nūllus로부터); 탈격 nūllō; 그 밖 nēminem, nēminī.
nihil(아무것도 — 불변화).
nūllus, -a, -um(어떤 ~도 아닌) — ūnus처럼 곡용.
nōnnūllus(일부·몇몇)(= nōn nūllus("아무것도 안" 아닌)); nōnnēmō(어떤 사람).

상호는 반복이나 alter...alter("하나는 ... 다른 하나는")·alius...alius("어떤 자는 ... 다른 자는")로 표현:
amant inter sē(서로 사랑한다)(inter+재귀).
alter alterum amat(각자 다른 쪽을 사랑한다).
aliī aliīs nocent(어떤 자들은 다른 자들에게 해를 끼친다).

대명사적 형용사 — 대명사처럼 곡용하는 형용사(UNUS NAUTA 패턴, 속격 -īus, 여격 ): 5 지시사 모두 + ipse + 9 UNUS NAUTA 형용사(Lectiō X § 112: ūnus, sōlus, tōtus, ūllus, nūllus, alius, alter, uter, neuter).
