Four Classes of Numerals
수사의 4 분류
English

Latin numerals fall into four classes, each answering a different question about quantity:

(1) Cardinals (cardinālia) — answering how many?. The basic counting numbers: ūnus, duo, trēs, quattuor, quīnque, sex, septem, octō, novem, decem... Most cardinals are indeclinable adjectives; only the numbers 1, 2, 3, and the multiples of 100 (ducentī, trecentī...) decline. Mīlle (1000) is indeclinable in the singular but declines in the plural (mīlia, mīlium, mīlibus).

(2) Ordinals (ōrdinālia) — answering which in order?. The order numbers: prīmus (first), secundus (second), tertius (third), quārtus (fourth)... All ordinals decline like bonus, -a, -um (1·2-decl. adjectives).

(3) Distributives (distribūtīva) — answering how many each? / how many at a time?. The "by-counts": singulī, -ae, -a (one each), bīnī (two each), ternī (three each), etc. Decline like 1·2 plurals (always plural). Used with collective and naturally-plural nouns and in certain idioms.

(4) Numeral adverbs (adverbia numerālia) — answering how many times?. The "times": semel (once), bis (twice), ter (thrice), quater (four times), quīnquiēs (five times)... Indeclinable.

The four classes systematize different ways of quantifying — by amount, order, distribution, frequency. Latin tightly distinguishes them; English often uses single forms (e.g., "two" for both cardinal and distributive in some contexts). Reading classical Latin requires recognizing which class is intended.

라틴어 수사는 네 부류로 나뉘며, 각각 양에 관한 다른 질문에 답한다:

(1) 기수사 (cardinālia) — "얼마나?". 기본 셈 수: ūnus, duo, trēs, quattuor, quīnque, sex, septem, octō, novem, decem... 대부분의 기수사는 불변화 형용사이며, 1·2·3과 100의 배수(ducentī, trecentī...)만 곡용한다. Mīlle(1000)는 단수에서 불변화이나 복수에서 곡용(mīlia, mīlium, mīlibus).

(2) 서수사 (ōrdinālia) — "몇 째?". 순서 수: prīmus(첫째), secundus(둘째), tertius(셋째), quārtus(넷째)...

"몇 번": semel(한 번), bis(두 번), ter(세 번), quater(네 번), quīnquiēs(다섯 번)... 불변화.

네 부류가 양화의 다른 방식 — 수량·순서·분배·빈도 — 을 체계화한다. 라틴어는 이들을 엄격히 구별; 영어는 흔히 같은 형을 쓴다 (예: "two"가 어떤 문맥에서는 기수와 분배 둘 다). 고전 라틴어 독해에 어느 부류가 의도되었는지 인식이 필요하다.

Note that compound ordinals are written as two separate words: tertius decimus (13th), vīcēsimus quīntus (25th). The order can be either way: quīntus et vīcēsimus is also possible.

Distinguish: secundus "second" (in order, sequential) from alter "the other (of two), the second of two": alter exercitus "the second of two armies"; secundus exercitus "the second army (in a series)".

Secundus also means "favorable" (as adj.) — secunda fortūna "favorable fortune". The dual sense reflects the verb root sequor "follow" — "the one following / the favorable one".

Ordinals are used in Latin where English sometimes uses cardinal: dates, regnal years, anniversaries (quīnquāgēsimus annus = "the 50th year" of a reign).

한국어

주의: 복합 서수사는 두 단어로 분리되어 쓰임: tertius decimus(13째), vīcēsimus quīntus(25째). 순서는 어느 쪽이든 가능: quīntus et vīcēsimus도 가능.

구별: secundus("둘째" — 순서, 연속)와 alter("(둘 중) 다른 하나, 둘 중 둘째"): alter exercitus(두 군대 중 둘째); secundus exercitus(둘째 군대 — 연속에서).

Secundus는 또한 "호의적인"(형용사)의 뜻 — secunda fortūna(호의적인 운명). 이중 의미는 동사 어근 sequor(따르다)를 반영 — "따르는 것 / 호의적인 것".

서수사는 영어가 가끔 기수를 쓰는 자리에 라틴어가 사용: 날짜·치세년·기념(quīnquāgēsimus annus = 치세 "50번째 해").

Usage of mīlle Singular mīlle behaves as an indeclinable adjective: mīlle hominēs "a thousand men" — agreeing in case with the noun by virtue of being indeclinable. Plural mīlia is a noun governing partitive genitive: tria mīlia hominum "three thousand men", literally "three thousands of men". This switch from adjective (sg.) to noun (pl.) is unique to mīlle.
mīlle 사용 단수 mīlle불변화 형용사로 작동: mīlle hominēs(1000명의 사람들) — 불변화이므로 명사와 격에서 그저 일치. 복수 mīlia부분 속격을 지배하는 명사: tria mīlia hominum(3000명의 사람들 — 글자 그대로 "사람들의 3천"). 형용사(단수) → 명사(복수)의 이 전환은 mīlle에 고유.

Distributives are used:

(a) With "plurals tantum" — nouns that have only a plural sense (cāstra "camp", litterae "letter", arma "arms"): bīna cāstra "two camps" (NOT *duo cāstra); ternae litterae "three letters".

(b) Where English uses "each" or "apiece": singulī cōnsulēs "one consul each (year)"; bīnī mīlitēs "two soldiers per (group)".

(c) Idiomatically in multiplication: bis bīna sunt quattuor "twice two is four" (the multiplier is the adverb, the multiplicand the distributive); ter ternī = "thrice three each" = 9.

(d) Regularly in poetry instead of cardinals: bīnī for duo, ternī for trēs, etc. Vergil and Horace use distributives where prose would use cardinals.

The numeral adverbs end in -iēs (or -iēns) from 4 onward. They are indeclinable. The forms semel (once), bis (twice), ter (thrice) are very ancient and irregular; from quater onward, regular formation begins.

한국어

분배수사는 다음에 사용:

(가) "plurals tantum" — 복수 의미만 가지는 명사(cāstra(진영), litterae(편지), arma(무기))와 함께: bīna cāstra(두 진영)(NOT *duo cāstra); ternae litterae(세 편지).

형 semel(한 번)·bis(두 번)·ter(세 번)는 매우 옛 형이고 불규칙; quater부터 정규 형성이 시작.

Roman Numerals · The System
로마 숫자 체계
English

Roman numerals use seven basic symbols:

I = 1 (originally a vertical stroke).
V = 5 (the upper half of X).
X = 10 (originally a stroke with a crossbar).
L = 50 (the early form of an angle ┴).
C = 100 (from centum).
D = 500 (from earlier ID).
M = 1000 (from mīlle; in Roman times often written ⅽⅼↄ or CIↃ).

Subtractive notation (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, etc.): regular by classical times. A smaller numeral immediately before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 5−1 = 4; XC = 100−10 = 90.

Additive notation (without subtraction): VI = 5+1 = 6; LX = 50+10 = 60; CCC = 100×3 = 300.

Bar above a numeral multiplies it by 1000: V̄ = 5,000; X̄ = 10,000; C̄ = 100,000; M̄ = 1,000,000. The Romans used this convention for very large numbers.

For numbers in the millions, the formula was deciēs centēna mīlia = "ten times a hundred thousand" = 1,000,000 (literally "10 × 100,000"). Even larger numbers used compounded multiplications.

Modern usage often retains Roman numerals for: chapter numbers, monarchs (Henry VIII), film sequels (Rocky II), copyright dates on films (MMXXVI = 2026), and clock faces.

한국어

로마 숫자는 일곱 개의 기본 기호 사용:

I = 1(본디 수직 막대).
V = 5(X의 위 절반).
X = 10(본디 가로 막대 있는 막대).
L = 50(초기 각도 ┴ 형).
C = 100(centum으로부터).
D = 500(이전 ID로부터).

Fractions · Time · Year Notations
분수·시간·연도 표기
English

Fractions are expressed in two main ways:

(a) Ordinal in numerator + plural feminine ordinal in denominator (with partēs "parts" understood or expressed): duae tertiae partēs "two thirds (parts)"; tria septima "three sevenths". The fraction is treated as a fraction of a whole.

(b) Halves and twelfths use special vocabulary (from old Roman fractional system, Roman asses):
dīmidius, -a, -um "half" = 1/2.
uncia = 1/12.
sextāns = 2/12 = 1/6.
quadrāns = 3/12 = 1/4.
triēns = 4/12 = 1/3.
quīncūnx = 5/12.
sēmis = 6/12 = 1/2 (the "half-as", from old coin).
septūnx = 7/12. bēs = 8/12 = 2/3. dōdrāns = 9/12 = 3/4. dextāns = 10/12 = 5/6. deūnx = 11/12.

Time: Roman day = 12 hours, divided sunrise to sunset; varied by season. Hours numbered: hōra prīma "first hour" (~6am winter, ~5am summer); hōra sexta "sixth hour" (noon).

Year notation: AUC (ab urbe conditā) "from the founding of the city" — Rome traditionally founded 753 BCE. Years reckoned from this anchor or by the names of the consuls (a primary dating method in formal documents): cōnsulibus M. Tulliō et C. Antōniō = "in the consulship of Marcus Tullius and Gaius Antonius" = 63 BCE.

Numeral usage: numerals govern the partitive genitive when emphasis is on division (decem mīlitum "ten of the soldiers"), but normally agree directly (decem mīlitēs "ten soldiers"). Numerals occupy positions adjacent to the noun: trēs librī or librī trēs — both standard.

한국어

분수는 두 주요 방식으로 표현:

(가) 분자에 서수 + 분모에 여복형 서수(partēs(부분)이 이해되거나 명시됨): duae tertiae partēs(2/3 부분); tria septima(3/7). 분수는 전체의 부분으로 다뤄진다.

(나) 1/2와 1/12 단위는 특수 어휘 사용(옛 로마 분수 체계, 로마 as로부터):
dīmidius, -a, -um(반) = 1/2.
uncia = 1/12.
sextāns = 2/12 = 1/6.
quadrāns = 3/12 = 1/4.
triēns = 4/12 = 1/3.
quīncūnx = 5/12.
sēmis = 6/12 = 1/2(반-as, 옛 동전).
septūnx = 7/12. bēs = 8/12 = 2/3. dōdrāns = 9/12 = 3/4. dextāns = 10/12 = 5/6. deūnx = 11/12.
