형용사의 비교 — 원급·비교급·최상급
A&G §§ 123-131 · pp. 60-66
§ 123
Three Degrees of Comparison
비교의 3 등급
English

Latin adjectives, like English ones, have three degrees of comparison:

(1) Positive (gradus positīvus) — the simple, unmarked form: longus "long", fortis "brave", cārus "dear".

(2) Comparative (gradus comparātīvus) — expressing a higher degree relative to a standard. Translations vary by context:
• "X-er than" (comparative comparison): longior quam "longer than".
• "rather X" or "somewhat X" (without comparison): longior "rather long".
• "too X" (excess): longior "too long" (depending on context).

(3) Superlative (gradus superlātīvus) — the highest degree. Translations:
• "most X" or "X-est" (relative superlative): longissimus "the longest".
• "very X" (absolute superlative): longissimus "very long".
• "extremely X" or "exceedingly X".

The dual translation possibilities — relative vs. absolute superlative, and the three nuances of the comparative — are crucial for accurate reading. Context determines which sense applies. Caesar prudentior fuit can be "Caesar was rather prudent" (somewhat) or "Caesar was more prudent" (than someone implied).

Latin's comparison system is largely regular: most adjectives form comparative and superlative by predictable suffixes added to the stem. A small set of high-frequency adjectives is irregular (suppletive), with comparative and superlative coming from different roots — parallel to English "good, better, best" (3 different stems).

한국어

라틴어 형용사도 영어와 마찬가지로 세 등급의 비교를 가진다:

(1) 원급 (gradus positīvus) — 단순하고 표지되지 않은 형: longus(긴), fortis(용감한), cārus(소중한).

(2) 비교급 (gradus comparātīvus) — 기준에 비해 더 높은 정도를 표현. 번역은 문맥에 따라 다양:
• "~ 보다 더 ~한" (비교 비교): longior quam(~ 보다 더 긴).
• "다소 ~한" 또는 "꽤 ~한" (비교 없이): longior(다소 긴).
• "너무 ~한" (과잉): longior(너무 긴).

(3) 최상급 (gradus superlātīvus) — 최고도. 번역:
• "가장 ~한" (상대 최상급): longissimus(가장 긴).
• "매우 ~한" (절대 최상급): longissimus(매우 긴).

§ 124
Regular Comparison · -ior · -issimus
정규 비교 형식
English

The regular pattern:

Comparative: stem + -ior (m./f.) and -ius (n.).
Superlative: stem + -issimus, -a, -um.

The stem is found by dropping the genitive ending of the positive:
longus, longī → stem long-longior, longius; longissimus.
fortis, fortis → stem fort-fortior, fortius; fortissimus.
audāx, audācis → stem audāc-audācior, audācius; audācissimus.
fēlīx, fēlīcis → stem fēlīc-fēlīcior; fēlīcissimus.
brevis, brevis → stem brev-brevior; brevissimus.

The comparative declines as a 3rd-decl. consonant-stem (gen. -iōris, abl. sg. -e, n. pl. -a, gen. pl. -um); the superlative as a 1·2-decl. adjective like bonus, -a, -um.

The pattern is highly productive — virtually any Latin adjective with a positive form can take these comparative and superlative endings, except for those that resist (treated below).

한국어

정규 패턴:

비교급: 어간 + -ior(남·여)·-ius(중).
최상급: 어간 + -issimus, -a, -um.

어간은 원급의 속격 어미를 떼어 얻는다:
longus, longī → 어간 long-longior, longius; longissimus.
fortis, fortis → 어간 fort-fortior, fortius; fortissimus.
audāx, audācis → 어간 audāc-audācior, audācius; audācissimus.
fēlīx, fēlīcis → 어간 fēlīc-fēlīcior; fēlīcissimus.
brevis, brevis → 어간 brev-brevior; brevissimus.

비교급은 3격변화 자음어간으로 곡용(속격 -iōris, 탈격 단수 -e, 중성 복수 -a, 속격 복수 -um); 최상급은 1·2격변화 형용사 bonus, -a, -um처럼.

이 패턴은 매우 생산적이다 — 원급 형이 있는 라틴어 형용사라면 거의 모두 이 비교급·최상급 어미를 받을 수 있다, 단 저항하는 것들 제외 (아래에서 다룸).

§ 125
-er Adjectives → -errimus
-er 형용사 — 최상급 -errimus
English

Adjectives whose nominative singular masculine ends in -er form the superlative by adding -rimus to that nominative form. The result is a doubled-r superlative: -errimus (preserving e) or simply -rimus (after the e-dropping pattern):

From 1·2-decl. -er adjectives:
pulcher → pulcherrimus (pulcher pattern, e dropped).
līber → līberrimus (miser pattern, e preserved).
miser → miserrimus.
integer → integerrimus.
aeger → aegerrimus.
sacer → sacerrimus.

From 3-decl. -er adjectives:
ācer → ācerrimus.
celer → celerrimus.
volucer → volucerrimus.

The comparative is formed regularly (with -ior): pulchrior, celerior, ācrior, līberior, etc. So the irregularity is only in the superlative.

Why this pattern? Historically, the -er suffix was associated with old comparative-like forms, and the -rimus attachment reflects a phonological assimilation. The doubled-r is preserved through long Latin tradition.

한국어

주격 단수 남성이 -er로 끝나는 형용사는 그 주격 형에 -rimus를 붙여 최상급을 만든다. 결과는 이중 r 최상급: -errimus(e 보존) 또는 -rimus(e 탈락 패턴 뒤):

1·2격변화 -er 형용사로부터:
pulcher → pulcherrimus(pulcher형, e 탈락).
līber → līberrimus(miser형, e 보존).
miser → miserrimus.
integer → integerrimus.
aeger → aegerrimus.
sacer → sacerrimus.

3격변화 -er 형용사로부터:
ācer → ācerrimus.
celer → celerrimus.
volucer → volucerrimus.

비교급은 정규적(-ior): pulchrior, celerior, ācrior, līberior 등. 따라서 불규칙은 최상급에만 있다.

이 패턴의 이유? 역사적으로 -er 접미사는 옛 비교 유형 형들과 연관되었고, -rimus 부착은 음운 동화를 반영. 이중 r은 라틴어 오랜 전통을 통해 보존되었다.

§ 126
Six -lis Adjectives → -limus
-lis 6 단어 — 최상급 -limus
English

Six adjectives ending in -ilis form the superlative in -limus (instead of the expected -issimus):

facilis (easy) → faciliorfacillimus.
difficilis (difficult) → difficiliordifficillimus.
similis (similar) → similiorsimillimus.
dissimilis (dissimilar) → dissimiliordissimillimus.
gracilis (slender) → graciliorgracillimus.
humilis (low, humble) → humiliorhumillimus.

The phonology: the l of the stem doubles before the -imus suffix; the -i- in -ilis is absorbed.

All other adjectives in -ilis form the superlative regularly with -issimus: ūtilis → ūtilissimus; amābilis → amābilissimus; nōbilis → nōbilissimus; memorābilis → memorābilissimus; incrēdibilis → incrēdibilissimus.

The six special -limus adjectives are common — facilis and similis appear constantly. Memorize them as a group; they are predictable once known.

한국어

-ilis로 끝나는 6 단어가 최상급에서 -limus(예상 -issimus 대신)를 가진다:

facilis(쉬운) → faciliorfacillimus.
difficilis(어려운) → difficiliordifficillimus.
similis(비슷한) → similiorsimillimus.
dissimilis(다른) → dissimiliordissimillimus.
gracilis(가느다란) → graciliorgracillimus.
humilis(낮은·겸손한) → humiliorhumillimus.

Note · plūs The singular plūs is a neuter substantive, governing the partitive genitive: plūs vīnī "more wine" (literally "more of wine"). It cannot agree with a noun in the singular as an adjective. In the plural, plūrēs, plūra is fully adjectival and behaves as a normal i-stem 3rd-decl. comparative. This split between singular (substantive) and plural (adjective) is unique among Latin adjectives.
주 · plūs 단수 plūs중성 명사로, 부분 속격을 지배: plūs vīnī("더 많은 포도주" — 글자 그대로 "포도주의 더"). 단수에서 명사와 형용사처럼 일치할 수 없다. 복수에서 plūrēs, plūra는 완전히 형용사적이며 정상 i-어간 3격변화 비교급처럼 행동. 단수(명사)와 복수(형용사) 사이의 이 분리는 라틴어 형용사 중 유일하다.
§ 128
Periphrastic Comparison with magis / maximē
우회 비교 — magis · maximē
English

Adjectives in -eus, -ius, -uus (i.e., with a vowel directly before the ending), when not contracted, form their comparison periphrastically using the adverbs magis "more" and maximē "most":

idōneus (suitable) → magis idōneus "more suitable" → maximē idōneus "most suitable".
arduus (steep) → magis arduusmaximē arduus.
egregius (excellent) → magis egregiusmaximē egregius.
pius (dutiful) → magis piusmaximē pius.
necessārius (necessary) → magis necessāriusmaximē necessārius.

The reason: a synthetic comparative *idōnior (with two adjacent vowels -iō-ior) would be phonologically awkward and was avoided.

Note: a few -eus adjectives do have synthetic comparatives, especially older ones: industrius → industrior (rare); poets sometimes coin tenuior from tenuis.

The periphrastic construction is also available for any other adjective when emphasis on degree is desired: magis sapiēns quam fortis "more wise than brave" — distinguishing two qualities. This use of magis ... quam ... emphasizes the relative nature of the comparison.

한국어

-eus, -ius, -uus로 끝나는 형용사(즉, 어미 직전에 모음이 있어 축약되지 않을 때)는 부사 magis(더)와 maximē(가장)을 사용하여 우회적으로 비교한다:

idōneus(적합한) → magis idōneus(더 적합한) → maximē idōneus(가장 적합한).
arduus(가파른) → magis arduusmaximē arduus.
egregius(빼어난) → magis egregiusmaximē egregius.
pius(경건한) → magis piusmaximē pius.
necessārius(필요한) → magis necessāriusmaximē necessārius.

이유: 합성 비교급 *idōnior(인접 두 모음 -iō-ior)는 음운적으로 어색하여 회피.

주의: 일부 -eus 형용사는 합성 비교급을 가진다, 특히 옛 것들: industrius → industrior(드뭄); 시인들이 가끔 tenuis로부터 tenuior를 만든다.

우회 구문은 강조가 필요할 때 어떤 형용사에서도 사용 가능: magis sapiēns quam fortis(용감하기보다 현명한) — 두 자질 구분. 이 magis ... quam ... 사용은 비교의 상대적 성격을 강조한다.

§ 129
★ Declension of the Comparative

★ Note: comparative is a consonant-stem, not an i-stem! Therefore:

Genitive plural in -um (NOT -ium).
Neuter plural nominative/accusative in -a (NOT -ia).
Ablative singular in -e (NOT ).

This distinguishes the comparative from regular 3rd-decl. i-stem adjectives like fortis (gen. pl. fortium, n. pl. fortia, abl. sg. fortī). The comparative descends from an old consonantal pattern and resists the i-stem encroachment.

The masculine and feminine are identical throughout; only the neuter differs in the nominative and accusative singular (altius) and plural (altiōra).

The superlative, by contrast, is a regular 1·2-decl. adjective: altissimus, -a, -um declines exactly like bonus. This is why the superlative is morphologically simpler than the comparative.

한국어

★ 주의: 비교급은 자음어간이지 i-어간이 아니다! 따라서:

속격 복수 -um(NOT -ium).
중성 복수 주격·대격 -a(NOT -ia).
탈격 단수 -e(NOT ).

이것이 비교급을 정규 3격변화 i-어간 형용사 fortis(속격 복수 fortium, 중성 복수 fortia, 탈격 단수 fortī)와 구별한다. 비교급은 옛 자음 패턴으로부터 내려왔고 i-어간의 침투에 저항한다.

남성과 여성은 내내 동일; 중성만 주격·대격 단수(altius)와 복수(altiōra)에서 다르다.

최상급은 반대로 정규 1·2격변화 형용사: altissimus, -a, -umbonus와 정확히 같이 곡용. 그래서 최상급이 비교급보다 형태론적으로 단순하다.

§§ 130-131
Defective Comparison · Comparison Constructions
결손 비교 · 비교 구문
English

Some adjectives lack a positive, having only comparative and superlative (or only some of these):

prior, prius (former) → prīmus (first); no positive — derived from preposition prae.
citerior (nearer, on this side) → citimus.
interior (inner) → intimus.
propior (nearer) → proximus.
ulterior (farther) → ultimus.

Others lack the comparative or superlative: e.g., egēnus "needy" has no comparative (rare); nōvus "new" has rare comparative recentior (but nōvior exists in late Latin); aureus "golden" has no comparison (it's an absolute property).

The standard of comparison after a comparative is expressed by:

(a) Ablative of comparison: bare ablative, equivalent to "than": frāter maior mē "a brother greater than I".
(b) quam + same case as the first member: frāter maior quam ego. The most common form in elaborate prose; the ablative is more compact (poetry, proverbs).

The superlative may be intensified by quam: quam fortissimus "as brave as possible". With quam+possum: quam celerrimē potest "as quickly as he can".

Quanto ... tanto ...: a correlative pattern: quantō plūs ... tantō minus "the more ... the less"; quantō difficilius ... tantō praeclārius "the more difficult, the more glorious".

Multō, paulō (degree of difference): multō melior "much better"; paulō prius "a little earlier".

한국어

일부 형용사는 원급이 결여되어 있고, 비교급과 최상급(또는 일부)만 가진다:

prior, prius(앞의) → prīmus(첫째); 원급 없음 — 전치사 prae로부터.
citerior(이쪽의) → citimus.
interior(안의) → intimus.
propior(가까운) → proximus.
ulterior(저쪽의) → ultimus.

다른 것은 비교급이나 최상급이 결여: 예, egēnus(궁핍한)는 비교급 없음(드뭄); nōvus(새로운)는 드문 비교급 recentior(nōvior는 후기 라틴어에 등장); aureus(금의)는 비교 없음(절대적 속성).

비교 기준은 비교급 뒤에 다음으로 표현:

(가) 비교 탈격: 전치사 없는 탈격, "~ 보다"에 해당: frāter maior mē(나보다 큰 형).
(나) quam + 첫 항과 같은 격: frāter maior quam ego. 정교한 산문에서 가장 흔한 형; 탈격은 더 압축적(시·격언).

최상급quam으로 강조될 수 있다: quam fortissimus(가능한 한 용감한). quam+possum: quam celerrimē potest(그가 할 수 있는 한 빨리).

Quanto ... tanto ...: 대응 패턴: quantō plūs ... tantō minus(더 ~할수록 덜 ~); quantō difficilius ... tantō praeclārius(어려울수록 더 영광스러운).

Multō, paulō(차이의 정도): multō melior(훨씬 더 좋은); paulō prius(조금 더 일찍).
