Cāsus Ablātīvus · Ablātīvus Absolūtus
The Latin ablative (cāsus ablātīvus) is historically the merger of three distinct Indo-European cases:
(a) The true ablative ("from") — separation, source, origin, comparison, agent. The semantic core: "away from", "out of", "than".
(b) The instrumental ("with, by means of") — means, manner, accompaniment, cause. The semantic core: "by, with, through which".
(c) The locative ("at, in") — place where (relics: Rōmae, domī, humī), time when, time within which. The semantic core: "in, on, at".
The three "ablatives" preserve their respective semantic territories despite sharing case-form. Mastering Latin syntax means recognizing which of these three sub-meanings is operative in a given clause — usually clear from context, sometimes signaled by a preposition or by a preferred word order.
The locative use mostly survives in fossilized place-names (Rōmae "at Rome", Carthāginī "at Carthage", Athēnīs "at Athens", domī "at home", rūrī "in the country", humī "on the ground"); for ordinary words, "place where" uses in + ablative. Time uses (when, within which) descend from the locative branch.
Ablative of separation: indicates separation, removal, deprivation, freedom from, lacking, abstaining. Often (but not always) with the prepositions ā/ab, ē/ex, dē:
ab urbe abscēdere "to depart from the city"; ex Italiā fugere "to flee out of Italy"; dē monte dēscendere "to descend from the mountain".
The preposition is regularly omitted with verbs of: (a) lacking — careō, egeō, indigeō; (b) freeing — līberō, solvō, līberō; (c) depriving — prīvō, spoliō, fraudō, exuō; (d) ceasing/abstaining — dēsistō, dēsinō, abstineō; (e) some intransitives of motion or mental separation.
līberat tē culpā "he frees you from blame"; caret cibō "he lacks food"; spoliāvit eum vītā "he stripped him of life"; ūnō dēsistō "I cease from one thing".
With names of cities, small islands, and a few common words (domō, rūre, humō), the ablative without preposition expresses motion away: Rōmā discēdere "to depart from Rome", not *ab Rōmā.
분리 탈격: 분리·이탈·박탈·해방·결여·자제를 표시한다. 흔히 (반드시는 아니지만) 전치사 ā/ab, ē/ex, dē와 함께:
ab urbe abscēdere(도시에서 떠나다); ex Italiā fugere(이탈리아 밖으로 도망치다); dē monte dēscendere(산에서 내려가다).
다음 동사들은 전치사를 정규적으로 생략: (가) 결여 — careō, egeō, indigeō; (나) 해방 — līberō, solvō; (다) 박탈 — prīvō, spoliō, fraudō, exuō; (라) 중지·자제 — dēsistō, dēsinō, abstineō; (마) 운동·정신적 이탈의 일부 자동사.
līberat tē culpā(너를 비난에서 해방한다); caret cibō(음식이 부족하다); spoliāvit eum vītā(그의 생명을 빼앗았다); ūnō dēsistō(한 가지를 그만둔다).
도시·작은 섬·일부 흔한 어휘(domō, rūre, humō)는 전치사 없이 탈격으로 떠남을 표현: Rōmā discēdere(로마에서 떠나다 — *ab Rōmā가 아님).

The ablative of origin / source indicates birth, descent, or material composition. With verbs of birth (nāscor, oriō, ortus sum): bare ablative for a person's lineage: nōbilī genere ortus "born from a noble line"; nātus equestrī locō "born of the equestrian order".
For divine ancestry or remote origin, ab or ex is added: nātus ex Iove "born from Jupiter"; oriundī ā Trōiā "originating from Troy" (the standard formula for Roman descent).
Material composition: the source-substance is in the ablative, often with ex: vāsa ex aurō facta "vessels made of gold"; statua marmore "a marble statue (of marble)".
물질 구성: 원료는 탈격, 흔히 ex와: vāsa ex aurō facta(금으로 만든 그릇들); statua marmore(대리석 조각상).
After a comparative adjective or adverb, the standard of comparison can be expressed in two ways:
(a) Ablative of comparison: bare ablative, equivalent to "than" + nominative/accusative. frāter maior mē "a brother greater than I" (lit. "greater (proceeding) from me").
(b) quam + same case as the first member: frāter maior quam ego. This is the more common form in elaborate prose; the bare ablative is more compact and common in poetry, proverbs, and shorter sentences.
Both forms coexist; the choice often depends on rhythm and emphasis. With negatives, quam + indicative is preferred: nēmō melior quam ille "no one is better than he".
Note: when the second item is a long phrase or has its own dependents, quam is required (the bare ablative would be ambiguous): maior quam ille quī tē docuit "greater than the one who taught you".

In passive constructions, the personal agent ("by whom") is expressed with ā / ab + ablative: liber ā magistrō legitur "the book is read by the teacher".
The agent must be a person or personified entity. For impersonal forces, things, or instruments, the bare ablative of means is used (no preposition): vī victus est "he was conquered by force"; tēlō percussus est "he was struck by a weapon".
Distinguish carefully:
• ā Caesare interfectus est = "killed by Caesar" (Caesar himself is the agent)
• gladiō interfectus est = "killed by the sword" (the sword is the means)
• ā Caesare gladiō interfectus est = "killed by Caesar with the sword" (both)
The dative of agent is used only with the passive periphrastic and (rarely) the perfect passive participle: liber legendus est mihi "the book must be read by me" (= "I must read it"). Elsewhere, ā / ab + ablative is required.
수동 구문에서 인적 행위자("누구에 의해")는 ā / ab + 탈격으로 표현: liber ā magistrō legitur(책이 선생에 의해 읽힌다).
행위자는 사람 또는 의인화된 존재여야 한다. 비인적 힘·사물·도구는 전치사 없는 수단 탈격: vī victus est(그는 힘에 의해 정복되었다); tēlō percussus est(그는 무기에 맞았다).
주의 깊게 구별:
• ā Caesare interfectus est = "카이사르에 의해 살해되었다" (카이사르 자신이 행위자)
• gladiō interfectus est = "칼에 의해 살해되었다" (칼이 수단)
• ā Caesare gladiō interfectus est = "카이사르가 칼로 살해했다" (둘 다)
행위자 여격은 수동 우회 활용·드물게 완료 수동분사와 오직 함께 쓰임: liber legendus est mihi(나에 의해 책이 읽혀야 한다 = 내가 책을 읽어야 한다). 그 밖에서는 ā / ab + 탈격이 필수.
Ablative of means / instrument: bare ablative (no preposition) for things or impersonal forces used to accomplish an action. gladiō pugnāre "to fight with the sword"; oculīs vidēre "to see with the eyes"; nāvibus pervenīre "to arrive by ships"; litterīs eum docuit "he taught him by means of letters / books".
Five common deponent verbs govern the ablative (originally instrumental): ūtor (use), fruor (enjoy), fungor (perform, discharge), potior (gain possession of), vēscor (feed on). ūtitur gladiō "he uses the sword"; fruimur amīcitiā "we enjoy friendship"; mūnere fungitur "he discharges his duty"; oppidō potītī sunt "they gained possession of the town"; vēscuntur lacte "they feed on milk".
Ablative of cause: indicates the (impersonal) cause or reason for an action or feeling. amōre laudat "he praises out of love"; īrā motus "moved by anger"; metū fugit "he fled out of fear"; spē vīcit "he conquered through hope". This is essentially an extension of the instrumental — what the action is "done through".
수단·도구 탈격: 행위를 이루는 데 사용되는 사물·비인적 힘에 전치사 없이 탈격. gladiō pugnāre(칼로 싸우다); oculīs vidēre(눈으로 보다); nāvibus pervenīre(배로 도착하다); litterīs eum docuit(책으로 그를 가르쳤다).
다섯 흔한 디포넌트 동사가 탈격을 지배한다 (본디 도구격): ūtor(쓰다), fruor(즐기다), fungor(수행하다), potior(차지하다), vēscor(먹고 살다). ūtitur gladiō(그가 칼을 쓴다); fruimur amīcitiā(우리는 우정을 즐긴다); mūnere fungitur(자기 의무를 수행한다); oppidō potītī sunt(도시를 차지했다); vēscuntur lacte(우유를 먹고 산다).
원인 탈격: 행위·감정의 (비인적) 원인·이유를 표시. amōre laudat(사랑 때문에 칭찬한다); īrā motus(분노로 움직인); metū fugit(두려움 때문에 도망쳤다); spē vīcit(희망으로 정복했다). 본질적으로 도구격의 확장 — 행위가 "무엇을 통해 이루어지는가".
Ablative of manner: indicates how an action is performed. Typically with cum; the preposition may be omitted when the noun has an adjective. cum cūrā "with care"; summā cūrā "with the highest care" (here cum can drop because of the adjective). silentiō "in silence"; magnā vōce "with a great voice".
Some manner-words are idiomatically without cum: iūre "rightfully", iniūriā "wrongfully", cōnsiliō "deliberately", cāsū "by chance", fortē "by chance, perhaps", doli "by trick", vī "by force".
Ablative of accompaniment: always with cum. cum amīcō "with a friend"; cum cōpiīs "with troops"; cum gladiō "with a sword (carried, accompanying)" — distinguish from instrument gladiō "with a sword (using)".
Ablative of quality / description: with adjective, expresses an outward feature or characteristic. vir summā statūrā "a man of the highest stature"; fēmina rārā pulchritūdine "a woman of rare beauty"; animō nōbilī "of noble spirit". Compare with the genitive of quality (more inherent character).

Time when: bare ablative for the time at which an action occurs. secundā vigiliā "at the second watch"; nocte "at night"; diē tertiō "on the third day"; aestāte "in summer"; annō MDCCC "in the year 1800"; hōrā quartā "at the fourth hour".
Time within which: bare ablative for the period within which an action is completed. quīnque diēbus "within five days"; brevī tempore "in a short time"; hieme "during winter"; annō "within a year".
Distinguish from the accusative of duration (= "for how long"): quīnque diēs "for five days" (acc., extent); quīnque diēbus "within / on the fifth day" (abl., point or container).
The English distinction can be subtle: "within the year" (abl.) vs "for a year" (acc., duration). Latin is precise: ablative for the time-frame in which something happens; accusative for the time over which something extends.
시간 (언제): 행위가 일어나는 시점을 전치사 없이 탈격. secundā vigiliā(두 번째 야경에); nocte(밤에); diē tertiō(셋째 날에); aestāte(여름에); annō MDCCC(1800년에); hōrā quartā(네 번째 시각에).
시간 (얼마 안에): 행위가 완결되는 기간을 전치사 없이 탈격. quīnque diēbus(5일 안에); brevī tempore(잠시 사이에); hieme(겨울 동안); annō(일 년 안에).
대격의 지속(="얼마 동안")과 구별: quīnque diēs(5일 동안 — 대격, 범위); quīnque diēbus(5일 안에 / 다섯 째 날에 — 탈격, 지점 또는 용기).
한국어의 구별이 미묘할 수 있다: "그 해 안에"(탈격) vs "한 해 동안"(대격, 지속). 라틴어는 정밀하다: 무언가 일어나는 시간 틀에는 탈격; 무언가가 지속되는 시간에는 대격.
Place where for ordinary words: in + ablative. in agrō "in the field"; in urbe "in the city"; in Italiā "in Italy".
Locative (fossilized "place where" without preposition): preserved with names of cities, towns, small islands and a few common words. The locative of 1st-decl. sg. ends in -ae: Rōmae "at Rome", Cōrīnthī "at Corinth"; of 2nd-decl. sg. in -ī: Dēlī "at Delos"; for plurals (1st and 2nd decl.) and 3rd decl., the form coincides with the ablative: Athēnīs "at Athens", Carthāginī/-e "at Carthage".
Common words preserving the locative: domī "at home"; rūrī "in the country"; humī "on the ground"; bellī (in domī mīlitiaeque "at home and in war").
Place from which: ā / ab, ē / ex, dē + ablative. With city names, bare ablative: Rōmā "from Rome"; Athēnīs "from Athens" (same form as locative — distinguished by context). For movement through, per + accusative: per silvam "through the forest".
Place to which (motion-toward): ad, in + accusative; with city names, bare accusative: Rōmam "to Rome".
장소 (어디서)는 일반 어휘에서 in + 탈격: in agrō(들에서); in urbe(도시에서); in Italiā(이탈리아에서).
도시명은 전치사 없이 탈격: Rōmā(로마로부터); Athēnīs(아테네로부터 — 처격과 동형, 문맥으로 구별). 통과 운동에는 per + 대격: per silvam(숲을 통하여).
장소 (어디로)(운동의 방향): ad, in + 대격; 도시명은 전치사 없이 대격: Rōmam(로마로).

Ablative of measure / degree of difference: with comparatives, the amount of difference is in the ablative. multō melior "much better" (lit. "by much better"); tantō plūs "so much more"; paulō ante "shortly before"; aliquantō post "somewhat afterwards"; nihilō minus "none the less".
Correlative pattern: quō plūs ... eō minus "the more ... the less"; quō difficilius ... tantō praeclārius "the more difficult, the more glorious".
Ablative of respect / specification: limits the application of an adjective or verb. maior nātū "greater in birth = elder"; minor nātū "younger"; captus oculīs "captured (i.e., blind) in the eyes"; captus mente "out of his mind"; doctus mūsicā "learned in music"; egregius bellō "outstanding in war"; nōmine, nōn rē "in name, not in fact".
The respect-ablative answers "with respect to what?" or "in what respect?". It is one of the most idiomatic Latin uses, often awkward to translate literally — context determines the natural English.
측정·차이 정도 탈격: 비교급과 함께, 차이의 양이 탈격으로. multō melior(훨씬 더 나은 — 글자 그대로 "많음만큼 더 나은"); tantō plūs(그만큼 더); paulō ante(잠시 전에); aliquantō post(다소 후에); nihilō minus(그럼에도 못지 않게).
The ablative absolute is one of Latin's most distinctive constructions: a noun (or pronoun) plus a participle (or, less commonly, an adjective or another noun) — both in the ablative — grammatically independent of the main clause but semantically related to it.
The construction's name: "absolute" (absolūtus) means "loosened, set apart" — the phrase is "loosed" from the main grammatical structure. Both elements stand in the ablative because the whole acts adverbially upon the main clause.
It serves the same function as English absolute participles ("the work being done, he left"), but is far more common in Latin and grammatically required when the noun in the ablative would not otherwise be expressible as subject or object of the main clause.
Restriction: do NOT use the ablative absolute if the ablative noun also appears as the subject or object (or other case-form) of the main clause. In that case, use a participle that agrees directly with the noun in its main-clause case.
WRONG: *urbe captā, hostēs urbem incenderunt (urbe and urbem refer to the same city — bad).
RIGHT: urbem captam hostēs incendērunt "the enemy burned the captured city" (participle agrees with urbem).
RIGHT: urbe captā, hostēs domum redīrent "with the city captured, the enemy returned home" (the city is not in the main clause).
틀림: *urbe captā, hostēs urbem incenderunt(urbe와 urbem이 같은 도시 — 나쁨).
맞음: urbem captam hostēs incendērunt(적이 잡힌 도시를 불태웠다 — 분사가 urbem과 일치).
맞음: urbe captā, hostēs domum redīrent(도시가 잡힌 채, 적은 집으로 돌아갔다 — 도시가 주절에 없음).
