Latin verse is quantitative, not accentual. This is the most fundamental fact about Latin prosody and the key difference from English (and Korean) verse:
• English verse is accentual: rhythm is built from stressed/unstressed syllables. "By the SHORE of GIT-che GU-mee" — stresses determine the beat.
• Latin verse is quantitative: rhythm is built from long and short syllables, regardless of word-stress. The Latin verse-line has a fixed pattern of long and short positions, into which the words must fit.
A syllable is classified as long or short by these rules:
(1) Long by nature — if the vowel is long: ā, ē, ī, ō, ū. Or if it is a diphthong: ae, oe, au, eu, ei, ui (in poetry, dipthong syllables are always long). Mark long vowels with macrons (ā) when relevant.
(2) Long by position — if a (otherwise short) vowel is followed by two or more consonants. The consonants may be in the same word or split across words. arma, terra, monstrum: each a, e, etc., is short by nature, but the syllable becomes long because of the following consonant cluster. x = ks counts as two consonants. z = ds also two.
(3) Short by nature and position — if neither (1) nor (2) applies. caput: each syllable (ca-put) is short by nature; ca- is short, -put is short.
Mute + Liquid (br, cl, gn, pl, tr...): a special phonological combination. Within a single word, this combination may leave a preceding short syllable short, or it may make it long, at the poet's discretion (mūta cum liquidā). Across word-boundaries, the cluster always makes the previous syllable long.
Elision: a final vowel or final -m before a word beginning with a vowel or h- is dropped (or fused) for metrical purposes. The dropped syllable doesn't count for the meter:
• mōnstrum horrendum → reads as 4 syllables: mōn-strum-or-rend-um (the -um elides into the following h-).
• multum ille et terrīs → 5 syllables: mult-ill-et-ter-rīs (two elisions: -um + il-; il- survives but -le + et contracts).
Reading Latin verse aloud requires identifying every long/short syllable and every elision — a non-trivial skill but the gateway to the entire metrical heritage of Latin literature.
라틴어 시는 양적(quantitative)이지 강세적이 아니다. 이것이 라틴어 운율의 가장 근본적 사실이며 영어(그리고 한국어) 시와의 핵심 차이점이다:
• 영어 시는 강세적: 리듬이 강세/비강세 음절로부터 만들어진다. "By the SHORE of GIT-che GU-mee" — 강세가 박자를 결정.
• 라틴어 시는 양적: 리듬이 단어-강세에 관계없이 장·단 음절로 만들어짐. 라틴어 시행은 고정된 장단 위치 패턴을 가지며, 단어들이 거기 맞게 들어가야 함.
음절은 다음 규칙으로 장·단 분류:
(1) 본질적으로 장음 — 모음이 장음이면: ā, ē, ī, ō, ū. 또는 이중모음이면: ae, oe, au, eu, ei, ui(시에서 이중모음 음절은 항상 장음).
• multum ille et terrīs → 5 음절: mult-ill-et-ter-rīs(두 elision: -um + il-; il- 살아남되 -le + et 축약).
라틴어 시를 소리 내어 읽으려면 모든 장·단 음절과 모든 elision을 식별해야 — 사소하지 않은 기술이나, 라틴어 문학의 모든 운율 유산으로 가는 관문이다.
A foot (pēs) is a sequence of two to four syllables forming a metrical unit. Latin's seven main feet (mostly inherited from Greek):
Two-syllable feet:
• Spondee (— —): two longs. Heavy, dignified. Rōmae.
• Iamb (◡ —): short + long. Light, rapid. amō.
• Trochee (— ◡): long + short. Falling rhythm. cōnsul.
• Pyrrhic (◡ ◡): two shorts (rare as a primary foot).
Three-syllable feet:
• Dactyl (— ◡ ◡): one long + two shorts. The "fingerprint" of epic and didactic verse. cōnsulis.
• Anapest (◡ ◡ —): two shorts + long. Marching rhythm.
• Tribrach (◡ ◡ ◡): three shorts.
• Amphibrach (◡ — ◡): short + long + short.
• Bacchius (◡ — —): short + two longs.
• Cretic (— ◡ —): long + short + long.
A verse line (versus) consists of a fixed number of feet of specified type, often with allowed substitutions (e.g., a spondee may stand for a dactyl in some positions). The meter's name describes the feet and their arrangement: dactylic hexameter = "six dactylic feet"; iambic trimeter = "three iambic measures (= six iambs)".
The seven feet combine into innumerable meters, but Latin literature concentrates on a handful:
• Dactylic hexameter: epic, didactic, satire (Vergil, Lucretius, Horace's Sermōnēs).
• Elegiac couplet: love poetry, epigram (Catullus 65+, Tibullus, Propertius, Ovid's elegies, Martial).
• Hendecasyllabic: short personal poems (Catullus's hallmark).
• Iambic trimeter: drama dialogue (Plautus, Terence in part), Horace's epodes.
• Sapphic stanza: lyric (Horace's odes).
• Alcaic stanza: lyric (Horace's most frequent ode-meter).
음보 (pēs)는 운율 단위를 이루는 2-4 음절의 연속. 라틴어의 7 주요 음보(대부분 그리스어로부터 물려받음):
2-음절 음보:
• 스폰데우스(— —): 장 + 장. 무겁고 위엄 있음. Rōmae.
The dactylic hexameter is the meter of epic poetry — Vergil's Aeneid, Homer's Iliad/Odyssey, Lucretius's De Rērum Nātūrā, Ovid's Metamorphōsēs — and of didactic verse (Vergil's Geōrgica, Lucretius), satire (Horace's Sermōnēs), and pastoral (Vergil's Eclogae).
It consists of six feet. Each of the first four is either a dactyl (— ◡ ◡) or a spondee (— —). The fifth foot is almost always a dactyl (very rarely a spondee — a "spondeic" line, marked and rare). The sixth foot is two syllables: long + either short or long (since the verse-end is naturally long; the last syllable can be "anceps" — long or short by convention).
Schema:— ◡◡ | — ◡◡ | — ◡◡ | — ◡◡ | — ◡◡ | — ×
Each of the first four feet may substitute spondee for dactyl. Within the line there is usually a caesura (a sense-pause):
• Most often after the third long of the third foot ("strong" or "masculine" caesura).
• Or after a short syllable in the third foot ("weak" or "feminine" caesura).
• Sometimes a "bucolic diaeresis" at the end of the fourth foot (typical of pastoral).
The caesura gives the line its characteristic rhythm and rhetorical pause. Greek hexameter has similar conventions but more flexibility; Latin's hexameter is the strict Vergilian model.
Vergil's first line of the Aeneid:
Arma virumque canō, Trōiae quī prīmus ab ōrīs ...
Scansion: — ◡ ◡ | — ◡ ◡ | — ‖ — | — ◡ ◡ | — ◡ ◡ | — —
Translation: "I sing of arms and the man, who first from the shores of Troy..."
Notice: The third foot is a spondee (canō with elision into Trōiae); strong masculine caesura between canō and Trōiae. The line ends with two longs, as standard.
Arma virumque canō, Trōiae quī prīmus ab ōrīs ...
스캔션: — ◡ ◡ | — ◡ ◡ | — ‖ — | — ◡ ◡ | — ◡ ◡ | — —
"무기와 인간을 노래하노니, 트로이 해변에서 처음으로..."
주의: 3번째 음보가 스폰데우스(canō가 Trōiae로 elision); canō와 Trōiae 사이에 강한 남성적 휴지. 행 끝이 표준대로 두 장음.
An elegiac couplet consists of two lines paired together: a dactylic hexameter followed by a dactylic pentameter. The couplet is the standard meter of Roman love poetry, dedications, epitaphs, and short reflective pieces.
The pentameter has the structure:— ◡◡ | — ◡◡ | — ‖ — ◡◡ | — ◡◡ | ×
Two halves separated by a strong caesura at the middle. The first half allows substitution (spondee for dactyl); the second half is invariably dactylic. The line is technically "five and a half + five and a half" — an unequal-symmetric structure that lends itself to epigrammatic completion. The pentameter must end with two long syllables: — —.
Used by: Catullus (poems 65-116), Tibullus, Propertius, Ovid (Amores, Heroides, Tristia, Ex Pontō, Fastī) — the standard meter of Latin love poetry, dedications, epitaphs, and short reflective pieces. Martial's epigrams use elegiac couplets for many of his shorter pieces.
Catullus 85 — perhaps the most famous Latin distich:
Ōdī et amō. Quārē id faciam, fortasse requīris. (hex.)
Nesciō, sed fierī sentiō et excrucior. (pent.)
Translation: "I hate and I love. Why do I do this, you may ask?
I do not know, but I feel it happening and am tortured."
Ovid, Tristia 1.3.1-2 (departure from Rome):
Cum subit illius trīstissima noctis imāgō, (hex.)
quā mihi suprēmum tempus in Urbe fuit, ... (pent.)
"When the saddest image of that night comes to mind,
which was for me the last time in the City..."
The structure of the elegiac couplet — the ample hexameter followed by the bisected pentameter — gives the genre its characteristic combination of expansiveness and epigrammatic point. The hexameter sets up an idea; the pentameter completes, twists, or undercuts it.
Ōdī et amō. Quārē id faciam, fortasse requīris. (6보격)
Nesciō, sed fierī sentiō et excrucior. (5보격)
"미워하고 사랑한다. 왜 그러는지 묻겠지.
모르겠다, 다만 일어나는 것을 느끼고 십자가에 매달린다."
오비디우스 트리스티아 1.3.1-2(로마에서의 추방):
Cum subit illius trīstissima noctis imāgō, (6보격)
quā mihi suprēmum tempus in Urbe fuit, ... (5보격)
"그 밤의 가장 슬픈 영상이 떠오를 때,
도시에서 나의 마지막 시간이었던 그 (밤의)..."
비가 대구의 구조 — 너른 6보격 + 양분된 5보격 — 가 장르 특유의 광활함과 에피그램적 정점의 결합을 부여한다. 6보격이 생각을 설정하고, 5보격이 완성·전환·전복한다.
The hendecasyllabic (Phalaecean) verse — eleven syllables — is Catullus's signature for short, conversational, witty pieces. Schema:
× × — ◡ ◡ — ◡ — ◡ — ×
The first two syllables ("base") are usually two longs (a spondee), occasionally a long-short or short-long. The middle is a strict dactyl-trochee-trochee sequence (— ◡ ◡ — ◡ — ◡). The line bristles with movement.
Catullus 1: Cui dōnō lepidum novum libellum
āridā modo pūmice expolītum?
"To whom do I dedicate this charming new little book, just polished off with dry pumice?"
Iambic trimeter (six iambs total, called "trimeter" because three iambic measures of two iambs each): drama dialogue (Plautus, Terence in part), Horace's epodes. Schema (basic):◡ — ◡ — | ◡ — ◡ — | ◡ — ◡ —
Substitutions: spondee, dactyl, anapest, tribrach are allowed in many positions. The result is a flexible, conversational rhythm.
Phaedrus's fables (1st century CE) use iambic trimeter:
Vulpēs et ūva ...
"The fox and the grapes ..."
Sapphic stanza: three "Sapphic lines" + one "Adonic line". Used by Horace for some of his most famous odes (Carmina 1.22, 1.32, etc.). Pattern:
Sapphic line: — ◡ — × — ◡ ◡ — ◡ — ×
Adonic: — ◡ ◡ — ×
Alcaic stanza: Horace's most frequent ode-meter. Used for political, philosophical, and personal odes. Four lines per stanza, with a complex pattern.
Asclepiad: Horace's love-odes use the various Asclepiads. Pattern (greater): — × — ◡ ◡ — ‖ — ◡ ◡ — ◡ —
Each meter carries traditional associations: hexameter = epic gravity; elegiac = love and lament; hendecasyllabic = casual wit; sapphic = personal lyric; alcaic = high lyric.
1: Cui dōnō lepidum novum libellum
āridā modo pūmice expolītum?
Vulpēs et ūva ...
With prosody we close New Latin Grammar. The system is complete. Let us survey what we have covered:
Pars I — Verba et Formae (Forms):
• Phonetics, sounds, syllables, accent (Lectiōs I-III).
• Inflectional forms of nouns: five declensions (IV-IX).
• Adjectives, comparison, numerals, pronouns (X-XIV).
• The verbal system: sum, four conjugations, non-finite forms (XV-XVIII).
• Deponents, irregulars, defectives (XIX-XXI).
• Particles and word formation (XXII-XXIII).
Pars II — Syntaxis (Syntax):
• Concord (XXIV).
• The syntax of every case — nominative through ablative (XXV-XXVIII), including the ablative absolute.
• Tense and the sequence of tenses (XXIX).
• The mood system: subjunctive uses (XXX), conditions (XXXI), indirect discourse (XXXII).
• Prosody — the music of Latin verse (XXXIII).
Allen and Greenough wrote in 1903; their organization remains canonical. The grammar is a tool for reading. With these forms and constructions you can confront two and a half millennia of Western thought in its original Latin: Cicero's speeches and philosophy, Caesar's history, Vergil's epic, Horace's lyric, Ovid's mythology, Livy and Tacitus, Augustine's theology, Aquinas's scholasticism, Newton's Principia, Spinoza's Ethica, Descartes's Meditationes, Linnaeus's taxonomies, Erasmus's letters, Petrarch's verses — much of the Western tradition is preserved in this language.
Continuation: read primary texts. The recommended path:
(1) Beginner's prose: Caesar's Bellum Gallicum — purposely lucid prose for military reports; the standard "first read" for advancing students. Then Cornelius Nepos's Vita biographies.
(2) Intermediate: Cicero's letters (Epistulae ad Atticum, ad Familiares) for everyday Latin; selected speeches (In Catilīnam) for forensic / political; De Amicitia, De Senectute for philosophical Latin in accessible form.
(3) Advanced: Vergil's Aeneid (epic, hexameter); Horace's Carmina (lyric, complex meters); Ovid's Metamorphōsēs (narrative hexameter); Tacitus's Annāles (densely allusive prose); Catullus's poems (varied meters).
Tools: the Loeb Classical Library has parallel English; the Bryn Mawr Latin commentaries explain difficulties at every stage; the Latin Library hosts free texts; Perseus Digital Library has dictionary-linked texts. Litterīs vel ipsa morte gravior "Through letters, even more weighty than death itself".
